I last played SS many years ago, and the ST I played recently had no sound (amongst other issues) so I can't really judge, but as these two seem fairly even in price now which would people recommend for a one game setup?

Had both. Very different games. ST is a lot faster and I’d probably say it’s the better game In terms of rules. However SS is still here due to nostalgic reasons.

Is SS really a 4k game now?

I have owned both, completely different games.

What do you prefer? If it is beers and a laugh with mates, then SS might be an option. Note that Bally Williams games are approaching what, 30 years old. So there will be some maintenance issues. SS is a shallow game, in a one game collection it can become farly boring, but is balls to the wall fun, whilst very repetitive.

ST should, by its nature be more reliable and has a similar central bash toy element. Whilst ST has better code than SS, and has more reliability, again, for me, the code was limited. It was mode mode mode and literally shoot the flashing light, which is what pinball is, but lacked real variety. The pretty lights will get you for a while and again it is fun. If I had just one game, would it be that. No. It wouldn't be either.

Hope that helps, and as someone who has owned both, I can be more help, drop me a DM.

Scared stiff is funnier, at least initially and the wizard mode privides a special moment in pinball. Star trek has great shots and loads of depth, so may be a better choice over a very long period. (This will depend a lot on your ability). If both games are in good cosmetic and mechanical condition, my guess is that most average players would prefer Scared Stiff. However Star Trek is 20 years newer than SS.

Both great choices, I prefer Star Trek as i find Scared Stiff quite easy now. However when i first owned it, SS gave me truly memorable pinball moments!

Pretty much what Matt said, something which is rarely mentioned when asking for opinions of games is the skill level of the person playing which could relate to longevity.

SS is fun to play, but if you are a good player will become boring very quick - both wizard modes aren't that hard to get to.
ST is pretty, and much faster with more shots to it (having 3 flippers helps that) it's extremely unlikely that all bar the elite will get to the final wizard mode, but there are different mini wizards and modes to be aimed for at all skill levels.

To me SS (any many other games of that era) are way over-priced for what the actual game is - the price is based on nostalgia and 'what it owes me' with people trying to get back the costs on how much it cost to refurb it and/or what they paid for it.

I'd go for ST if you were looking to keep it for much more than a couple of months.

Scared Stiff - superb game, Wizard mode is easy to reach but tricky still to complete and if you do then you just try to complete it multiple times in one game. It looks gorgeous, easy to maintain to be honest, and is just a great all round pin.

I’m still trying to get my head around Wayne’s earlier comment that both SS wizard modes are easy to get to.

I’ve had my SS for over 10 years and I’ve never achieved the spider multiball 😢

I like that both SS and DM have wizard modes that are achievable for more casual players.

Completing the wheel on Scared Stiff is the thing to aim for, not easy to get everything on the wheel to achieve Spider Multi ball.

Fathom is a beautiful game, but would bore the pants off me in a collection of one again, code code code for me. ST and SS are both beatiful games with great cab art to have in a home environment.

I never found it FUN to go for though to be honest, felt a bit like a tedious get side quest....

You're missing the point , the Fun is what you get when you complete it.
It's like going for Vacation jackpot in Whitewater, sod everything else and just aim for getting Vacation jackpot.
That's were the Fun is.

Yeah I love the payoff that’s why we chase, but also I like the chase to be fun along the way. Always found that element a bit grindy...

Has to be ST over SS for me .SS feels so old now and slow when I've played them at events , ST is quite fast and has a nice flow and feels very fresh and blingy . TOM and TZ I would put in the same category as SS way over priced for what they are .

All the WMS games are starting to feel dated in terms of depth. It’s just a shame that newer games didn’t develop their toys in the same way the code improved.

I like 90s games still but they were developed for very different environments. How many people would be able to fathom the rules of some of the modern games in an arcade rather than home environment? I honestly have zero idea of hoe games such as GOG and camp Batman are meant to be played and just flail around until I drain.

Don’t know it’s any different - lock the ball! Get multiball!

SS I’ve had for a number of years. Don’t play it often. But when I occasionally have friends round. None of them want to play deep games. They want easy rules, layout and a theme that’s fun.. SS captures this..

Star Trek and it’s not even close! Chuck in the movie soundtrack from pinball-browser and it gets even better!

^ spot on. SS great for newbies, theme/shout outs and nostalgia, not to mention that many pinhead's have had the chance of 24 years of playing SS as oppose to 7 for ST so will gravitate to the newer, deeper rules game.

Is SS really a 4k game now?

Yep, list yours for that much and it will sell almost instantly...
