Sports Games - Will we ever see another?

I have been thinking about sports games and the fact there hasn’t been any new games that are sports themed for ages (and yes, I am aware of Super Hoops, but the less said about that game the better). The last one must surely be Stern NFL?

Given the mass of appeal of most sports over a lot of dad rock bands (yes Rush, I am looking at you), wouldn’t it make sense for the manufacturers to have made a sports game by now. Surely NFL or football (FIFA themed🤔) would sell in their thousands, if done right. Even ice hockey, basketball, F1 (is it a real sport?) or beach volleyball (🤔) would work.

I guess I am very surprised we have not seen more sports games in this modern era.

Thoughts?

If they have real teams/players/participants I think they'd have to update them yearly, which is entirely possible with code updates. Sounds like a licensing nightmare though. Playing old FIFA or F1 games feels really dated, even after just one year when players/drivers switch teams or move on.

Yeah, I understand what you mean, but there are other ways of doing it, look at World Cup 94, that still works.

Maybe the World Cup 94 sequel seeing as the next World Cup is back in the US

It would have to be a generic sports theme without 'branding' for a few reasons.

The sheer cost of getting a license and having to deal with all of the indivduals involved
Keeping it up to date
Not deterring fans of other teams - I couldn't bring myself to play a Man Utd themed machine

I'm definitely not paying 13k for a sport based game. :D

Honestly given the price of NIB these days its got to be a good theme to warrant the price.

I don't think you'll ever see a sports based theme in this climate.

Sport themed pinball tend to be poor . look at striker xtreme! plus the license costs would be crazy , the same reason I presume we wont see eSports themes like minecraft call of duty etc either

however as my favourite "sports" pin is Rollergames my opionion wont count for much!

Fastest growing sport in the USA is pickleball.... Can't wait

Can’t stand any professional sport and the lad culture that goes with it. If I had any interest in watching young men in tight shorts run around and hug each other then my internet history would look very different.

BUT…..

WCS is one of the most fun pins out there. Simple to understand rules. Great for casual players. If only the code was slightly more polished. I’d have another in a heartbeat if the price was right.

Can’t imagine ever having one themed to a particular team though and actually the large LCD would probably work against it.

If you run a search under theme on ipdb it really stretches the term. It includes the afformentioned stern pinball but also fathom for scuba diving.
