Hello all

I just bought my first pinball machine, a 1980 Bally's Space Invaders, and I'm having a minor issue. When the ball is in play, if somone presses the Credit Button the game resets and starts over just as it would if it was a new game. I doubt this is a setting, so I am assuning it's a switch or something that's not telling the brain to deactivate the credit button until the game is over? Does anyone have any ideas on where I should start looking? Keep in mind I'm a noob at working on pinball machines.

Thanks!

Jeff

That’s the desired effect. It’s the same on all bally ss games.

If you are on ball 1 though it will add another player if not already on a 4 player game.
Really? Not doubting you, but that just seems strange. This was my favorite pinball game growing up and I'd imagine there would have been a ton of fights in the arcade by someone just being a jacka$$ and hitting the button. Thanks for the reply!

This is how most pins work up until the end of the 80s, like with the Bally Williams WPC89 boardset where you could change a setting to stop it occuring.

I suppose noone realised back in the day because you'd be wasting money by resetting the game and probably end up in a fight.

Who's really going to put another credit in a game while someone else's playing then reach Infront of them to hit the credit button?😁

It's been known for people to abuse this in tournaments by restarting games

Most pinball machines have recessed start buttons, so it's near impossible to accidentally restart a game.

During the wacky drug-fuelled era of the Bally 6803 based pinball machines, they decided to switch to a start button the sticks out, and is so sensitive that it resets a game if you breathe too heavily near it 🤦‍♂️

Who's gonna reach in front of somebody to reset a game? My drunk friends!!! LOL!!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. I guess I just never realized that's how the games were back in the early 80s.

The sensitivity of that switch saw errors when entering initials for a High Score, it had such little 'feel' to it.

Williams brought in selectable 'Restart' options after adding a lamp in the Start button, which could tempt kiddies to press it, regardless of anyone playing the machine.

One thing about your Invaders, it is normal for the small coin lockout solenoid on the front door to cut out during the reset between each ball, while the targets reset, etc. As I understand it, this is because the coin switches are ignored during this interval, so it's preventing any coin inserted at that moment from being accepted but not putting up Credits.

And the minimum score is 50 points, so matches will only ever be for 00 or 50.
