solving resets with Daughter board

Didnt realise they had them at pinball heaven. Ordered mine from the website. Oh well. Wasn't much extra. They rave on about these in pinside.

I have no idea about electronics. In principle I love the sound of these.
But can anyone tell me? Are you masking underlying issues by using one. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, if you will??
Whats the worst that can happen

looks like it gives a beefier 5v to the cpu via the 12v so would say it's a good mod (in my opinion) but having said that should not get resets if all is well with the electrics anyway

i had one, and several minutes later the doorbell rang. it was a paedophile psychopath who murdered my entire family and then chased me naked around the garden with an electric cattleprod. that was pretty bad

First bit was grim! but if it was not for that you might have enjoyed the 2nd bit:rofl:

I'm sure you can guess, I have already posted a rant about these on the forum and why they are a bad idea ;)

I don't want to ruin Phil's sale's so I will be fair

The short version is, if you wanted to use one to diagnose the problem, then sure why not, it is going to help you point out whether the problem is with the +5v supply from your driver board, or something else on the cpu board.

But, it is masking the underlying problem and you have to remember that all the other boards in your backbox are also connected to the same +5v rail and thus if you have a failing +5v psu this could cause problems with other boards.

Additionally if you have mods running on the +12v rail (as many do) you will likely be over-driving the +12v rail by adding the cpu as well.

In summary, they do work, and could be useful for diagnoses, but I disagree with their use as an expected permanent fix

In that case it might be handy for a backup at say a meet etc to keep a machine going, nothing worse when one goes tits up when you need it to work

As far as I'm aware it shouldn't reset. Period. One reset every so often is the start of it!!

A fully working pin will not reset ever (with a couple of exceptions caused by software bugs)

The occasional reset is usually dirty/worn power connectors. Regular resets is usually low voltage and/or high AC ripple, or a CPU board fault (bad RAM, bad ASIC socket etc)

Cool. I like the sound of the board which you install even with a stable 5v. Anyone know how old the article is?

Well I had one of these fit on my TAF at the NLP Manchester, at home it never missed a beat, every time I took it to a show (not the 8bit flip funny enough) it would reset.
Bought one from Phil and it has not skipped a beat since, yes I am kind of worried there is a problem somewhere but without the skills to fix it you kind of cross your fingers and after a while you think must be ok.
It is a great get out of jail free card!
