Hi

Any recommendations for a good quality solder sucker. The manual ones with the plunger.

Don't mind paying a bit extra if it sucks a little better, last longer...

Thanks

John

I just have a cheap one off ebay and it works perfectly fine. Now a de-soldering station, that would be something. Anyone recommend a good ( but cheap ) de-soldering station/gun?

i have a stations, gun, looking for manual one - you could start your own thread :-)

I bought a cheap 12v vacuum pump from China and am going to look at modifying a solder sucker with it. Permanent suction and them just use the iron to melt the solder.

I tried one of these from eBay and it was not good at all, It blocks up and falls to bits but tbf I didn't expect much for £2 odd. I borrowed a far superior one about the size of a bicycle pump and made of a light Ali - I'd also like to find a source for a decent one.

If you are going to use one of those, you need a decent one. A good way to test it is to press the plunger in, put your finger over the nozzle and then press the button. The plunger should hardly move until you take your finger off the nozzle.

Got one now - very good. The little bit of silicon tube (fuel pipe line for any aero modelrs) is superb. Worth getting some silicon tube and moddig your own solder sucker tool! They even send a spare bit with it.

Cheers

JB

Hi,

I used to work in a PCB factory when I was a teenager. The only de-soldering method untilised there was the "soldering wick" / "soldering braid". During most of my conversations with pinball operators & pin collectors this method is rather frowned upon. Works well for me though. Enclosed is a little video to explain how it works incase you have never heard of it. Its is best bought through mail order from a place like CPC as opposed to a high street store like Maplin where the price always seems proper expensive in comparison.

@YOP great little video Dude, i've never ever had any success whatsoever using braid, but in that video it looks easy peasy. the comments made interesting reading - one person said that some wick comes with built-in flux but some doesn't, presumably mine doesn't. i don't have any separate tub of flux so can someone link to one that does please, then i will chuck mine away (or whoever wants it can have it). i knew there had to be something i was missing, it was always just a joke when i tried using braid/wick.

other commenters said that it's no good for pinball as the iron needs to be too hot, but presumably he was using crappy wick as well

I have an AOYUE hot air station, which they seem to do pretty well with, no ideas on the cheap desoldering stations sorry, I've found most of the cheap ones to be aweful

Got one of the duratool desoldering stations a few years ago on Chris's (poi bug) recommendation.

Haven't had any problems with desoldering anything since, great piece of kit.

Just to add to the conversation above, a good quality braid will give better results than those plastic solder suckers.

Don't buy generic ebay braid, get 3M or Chemtronics or another quality brand. I get mine from Farnell. Handy to have in the toolbox for on-site desoldering where you can't use the de-soldering station

i bought one of these as well, and just gave it its first test drive. yes it works well, but i don't think it works any better than the standard longer cheaper model. a downside is that the silicon tubing at the end gets clogged, so i had to keep taking it off and clearing it by pushing a toothpick in there. i also ordered some decent braid on the advice above, and chucked my crappy stuff out - but that's not arrived yet so i can't test it out.

Compared to the cheapo one I have this one works many times better, my only criticism is that it can be a little small if you've huge hands. When you push the plunger back down, if you push it further in it will poke out of tip enough usually to clear the silicon tubing.
