From looking into this myself I’m getting mixed results.
Does a Rev C Stern shaker motor, installed on JP Pro,need the Capacitor kit (as per the 2018 stern bulletin saying possible slam switch issues without it) or not?

Mines working fine but came across a thread where someone blew the cabinet board after installing the shaker. The the mention of the capacitor kit came up - related? Unrelated?

Anyone have any more info on this please.

Just realised these ‘Rev C’ shakers are NOT official Stern ones - is this correct also?

If it has the cap on it it’s for a Sam game
Your cabinet node board won’t last long if you fit it to a spike game

It’s a Rev C - for Spike games, no cap on it.
I’m asking if it should be used with the cap kit as per the Stern service bulletin or ok as it is.
Also asking if blowing node boards is related to NOT using the cap kit.

This is what I’ve used:

If your pin is under warranty and you fit an aftermarket shaker and the node blows - you are in trouble.

The inline capacitor kit is to be used on the cabinet node board - on the input power. There should be NO CAPACITORS ON THE SHAKER MOTOR ITSELF. The inline capacitor should be on CN14 of the cabinet node - It just smooths the 48v power in.

It also says in the PDF that this is for Stern shaker motor kits only. I know stern shaker motors are just a motor with no components on it whatsoever.

Maybe email Pinball Life and ask them the question ? If you do blow your board then surely after asking them it is their responsibility.....???

Stern do make quite a big thing about only using their shaker motors.

I’m sure it’s fine, just wanted to clarify.
I thought it was an ‘official’ shaker from Pinball life (the wording doesn’t exactly say otherwise).
So this capacitor kit - is it needed for pins made AFTER the bulletin went out, seems lots of places sell these shakers without clear instruction regarding this.

The bulletin is only for shaker motor install. At no point in the past did they put these onto the cabinet node boards in prevous games - only on the ones on the playfield.

It reads to me it is on ALL games.

As I said - ask the manufacturers of the shaker motor.

Cheers, I’ve emailed Terry @ pinball life.

It surprises me that when you look on the Stern website (to buy a shaker) there’s no mention at all of these caps being included or needed, hence my confusion.

You are lucky if you get anything with aftermarket accessories with Stern !

Psychic powers are needed it seems.....

But saying that - Pinball life are just as bad.

I am 90% certain they use the same motor.....

The latest official Stern start motor kit, #502-5027-01 includes the capacitor but older ones don't so bear that in mind when you order one.

Not on the Stern website they don’t, no mention of them at all.

Seems the cap kit was for slam tilt issues anyway not safety related or to avoid damaging node boards so I’m happy without.

That’s a bulletin, says they are included but they’re not. Here’s where they sell the shakers:

I have had a week full of capacitor incidents.

1. First my paragon started playing up - the centre target not registering. Crappy capacitor needed replacing.
2. None of the targets on Harlem trotters were working. No caps - I should have spotted that on my underside rebuild - had to add them, not as easy to do when the pf back in the machine, but still only a 20 minute job.
3. Got some pcb boards delivered and immediately realized I'd sent the wrong Gerber files to the production house. Missing two very important capacitors and a resistor. Now got a load of boards I'm going to have to hand fix to make them work

All of the above my own fault - but right now I've had enough of capacitors. Hopefully in the next world there will be no such thing as capacitance!

@Andydn Did you ever get a response from Pinball Life?

I ordered a Shaker Motor kit from Pinball Heaven thinking it would be an Official Stern kit, but have received a Pinball Life Shaker motor kit.

All the reviews seem to indicate the Pinball Life shaker motors are just as good as the Stern ones.

My concern is that it doesn't include the Cabinet Node Capacitor Kit 502-7059-00 that is included with the official shaker motor?

Also seen some unverified comments on Pinside that the issue was later fixed in firmware, but Stern are still including the Capacitor with their kits.
