So I've started tearing down RS already despite it only arriving on Wednesday
smile-1.png
I don't think there's many mods for this one (although I could be wrong) so I don't have a list of extras I'm going to add unlike when I did JD and WW. I am going to paint up the radio and maybe add the backboard and bulldozer decals that Treasure Cove do. Apart from it needing a good clean and polish there are the following problems to fix:

  • Bob's Bunker/Ball Lock scoop doesn't kick the ball back out except during a ball search. When you lock ball 1 it recognises this but then after it's ejected during the ball search you have to lock ball 1 again, and again etc.....can never get to lock ball 2.
  • Fish insert wear - looks like I might have to break the paint brushes out for this one, see how brave I'm feeling.
  • Red's eyes don't open - broken plastic link in the head needs replacing. Tbh I'm expecting to find other issues with both the Red and Ted heads as I take them to bits.

So far I've not come across any broken plastics or other damage which is nice

What rubber colour have other RS owners gone with. I'm usually a white rubber with red flippers person but the black rubber thats on it at the moment fits the theme (with the yellow flipper bats). Some initial pics to follow shortly.

Some pics.....

Doesn't look *that* filthy actually, or have you given it a quick wipe over already ?

Though that shooter lane is pretty funky

I really want to play RS now ....one of my 'happy place' games

Oh ....white rubber, always white rubber for me.

Really enjoyed RS at the Slam - I'm sure you'll enjoy bringing this one to a nice shine!

Agree on white rubber - looks slick.

Finished the tear down today....

Now I've got a load of cleaning to do

Your right Sgt, it's not too bad and I'd only given the US map area a very quick wipe. Other good news is there are no broken plastics so the replacement parts list is very small at the moment, just a few switches and star posts and the eye plunger for Red. I'm going to strip the Red head down and see what else might be broken but hopefully it's just cleaning required (I'll do the Ted head as well, but first look at that makes me think everything is working).

For those that are thinking about doing their first teardown I take the parts off in sections, lay them out on paper, add any notes and photograph them before they go in individual bags with the layout/notes paper. Some examples below....

I'll take some pics of taking the Red head apart and post them up as this might be quite useful to show.

Hope you have those in a safe place or they are stuck to the paper.

All nice and safe

I put each set of things in one of those sealable freezer bags and then the freezer bags in a box under the pin. So I end up with with a load of bags each with a different set of bits in.....which I now need to go through and clean

So I finished taking the Red head apart but rather than put all the detail in this thread (because there are is a load of pics and this thread will probably end up with plenty of pics anyway) I've created a new thread in the Tech section:

Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and most of the bits (apart from the eye shut plunger) look in good nick. I'm gonna clean it up and put it back together before doing the same for the Ted head.

As always a great log sir

, it's going to be a peach, pf looks in super shape with very little hole wear, always nice to work on a machine which you know will look good in the end.

When you lock ball 1 it recognises this but then after it's ejected during the ball search you have to lock ball 1 again, and again etc.....can never get to lock ball 2.

Check the spinner is connected up correctly, I have seen it connected as the mouth which mucks up locking. I would suggest checking all your switches in test and verifying on the DMD that the switch you trigger is what appears on screen

I think I might have solved this, although I won't know for sure until I put things back together. When I took the ball lock scoop out it rattled and I found a large nut inside it. God knows how it got in there but I think it might have been blocking the ball from the lock kick out switch. Also, it looks like one of the ball lock switches is a bit worn out and doesn't reliably click when closed. I've order a new one so hopefully that should sort the problem. The only broken bits seem to be the eye plunger in Red's head as the rest of that is cleaning up really nicely

Great log, nice to see a machine come apart, be cleaned and then go back together. Good tip on the paper idea, I did do that and had a few trail misfits on my TAF. I will follow yor advice when I do the bookcase.

Keep taking pictures, we like pictures.

I've started taking the Ted head apart and have come across another broken part that I can't find listed on the usual UK suppliers so before I have to go abroad to get one I thought I'd put the call out on here. I need a Plunger Stop Bracket Assembly A-14029. If anyone has one they can part with, please get in touch.

Looks like I'm going to be able to source the broken bracket from The Legend
biggrin-1.png

I've left the Ted head in bits for now until the new part turns up so turned my attention to the ball lock scoop. This has been stripped down and cleaned plus I replaced one of the switches as it felt a bit worn out. I'm going to do the same for the Start City and Skillshot scoops today. I've also had a new coil turn up this morning for the Red head as the current eyes shut one is incorrect and too powerful....could be why the eyes shut plunger was broken

.

Finally, I've started cleaning the rest of the metal parts. On other shop jobs I've used wet'n'dry to sand out the ball lines and it's taken ages. As others have said on here, it's not really worth it as they come back pretty quickly so I'm just giving all the metals a good scrub with a Scotchbrite pad and making sure they're nice and clean. I'll chuck some new pics up shortly.....

Yes don't go to town on the ball guides cause they will soon go back to having ball marks in them. Like you have allready said just give them a good clean with the Scotchbrite pads and get rid of all the grime.

D.

You are going through this quickly, are you not working this week?

I have been spending quite a lot of spare time on this
biggrin-1.png
I've finished all the cleaning now and it's time to start putting things back together. I've only put a couple of coats of wax on this time but the pf has come up nice....

It's all back together now and I'm really enjoying playing it....what a great game
biggrin-1.png
The missus has gone to China with work and took the good camera so I'll take some crappy iphone pics tomorrow and then some better ones when she's back. Still a few bits and bobs to do though, the upper left flipper seems weak as it works ok until it has a ball on it then really struggles so I can't hit Red in the mouth during multiball and then there's the cosmetic stuff:

  • I want to get some decals for the bulldozer blade and maybe the back panel
  • Currently got some black legs on it but I'm thinking about doing a black and yellow stripe paint job on them..what do people think?
  • The fish insert needs some delicate touch ups....this is going to be a real painting test as it looks like I'll have to actually repaint the fishes head

I've still not got the backbox GI working but tbh I haven't looked into this much yet.

And back together so soon, having your missus going away to China has some benefits. Glad to hear you are finally getting able to enjoy it.

All meaningless without some really good pictures. :-)
