Need a rivet press, think I've decided on one from Machine Mart, see pic, unless anyone knows of a better one around that price.
What I really need are the dies and rivets. Speaking to @replicas he says @David retro stock the rivets, who knows where I can get the dies from?
Thanks, Alan.IMG_1603.webp

Alan,

The dies are the hardest part to get hold and expensive.

The rivets are 1/8" semi tubular rivets.

You need 2 dies, one for the top and one for the bottom and they are different.

Available here and this is for the set as they send you both top and bottom according to their write up.

You will also need to adapt the rivet press you are intending to buy so that it accepts the 3/16 shaft that these dies have. That means drilling a 3/16 hole in exactly the right place on the base plate of the press and probably a sleeve for the top die as the receptor for the die on the press is greater than 3/16 shaft (and metric).

And it is a bit of a faff to use - I sometimes just use the dies and a hammer as it is easier.

You are welcome to borrow mine if you want to see how you get on (my office is Gateshead - we moved from Chinatown where you and I had a drink together 17 years ago when I first came to Newcastle!)

Alternatives are pintonka

Or the cheap chinese one that Pintonka warns against

Apparently people who have used both the press and pintonka prefer the pintonka. @s000m

Tell me about it. Just spent over an hour trying to sort the relevant dies, everything’s in America. exorbitantly expensive for the amount of use I’ll give it, and that’s if they’ll post to GB. A lot don’t.

@s000m where did you get that kit from? Do they supply the correct dies with the Pintonka? Rivets I can get from Retro Arcade, it’s knowing the correct size dies and where to get them,
TIA Alan.

@Asiapinball has the link above. It comes with everything you need as well as rivets with different sizes.

On the rivets the pintonka does come with a selection of rivets.

You will likely use the 3/16" length the most and the partnumber for those when you need to reorder is 07-6688-18. Other lengths just have different last 2 digits so 07-6688-xx. The sizes are in increments of 1/32".

You will also use some washers when riveting plastics. Part number is 4700-0003-02

So how to choose what length rivet? What I do is test assemble and add an extra washer. If the end of the rivet is close to being flush with the extra washer then you have the right length rivet. Take off the extra washer and then press the rivet.

Hope ghis helps when you cone to doing riveting

I cannot believe the complexity of this. I too would like to buy a riveting tool for ramps but all of the above might as well be in Swahili.

I’ve recently bought the Pintonka kit. I’ve just copied the above. Great info Paul 👍

Pintonka is available direct from supplier here. The dies are built into the tool so no need for separate dies.

There doesn’t seem to be any UK suppliers for the Pintonka. Quite a few trading slyly, I think, on the name Tonka.
Looks like I’ll have to find a US ebay seller that exports to the UK.

That looks very similar to the kit I bought from eBay

I feel your pain.
Left my BB with @replicas last Pinfest for him to stencil. Put new ramps, plastic, wireforms etc in, they all needed riveting so when I picked the BB up I got Daz to do the riveting.
Looks straight forward, handy bit of kit to have I thought.
Found out later I’d missed a couple of bits so I thought I’d buy one. What a rabbit hole.

It's actually really simple, Gaz. Just stick a rivet though the two things you want to rivet together and use the rivet tool as a squisher to squish the rivet. That's it. The dies are just the end pieces of the squisher that do the actual squishing.

Rivets, like nails, come in different lengths. Just choose one which is long enough to poke out through the things you want rivetted together and squish it. If the things that are being rivetted are thick you'll need a longer rivet than if they are thin.

Simples.

Now, Get Squishing!

Alan. This is a link to the website of the guy that designed and made them. You just need to email him at the address on his website and he will get one across to you. He ships internationally. No need to go through a reseller and risk getting a fake.

When you put it like that….,,.

This looks to be the same guy as the website link I posted and this includes the uk vat so you will not have to deal with customs etc. About £131 delivered to your door. Simples.

And Alan the offer still stands if you want to borrow my press or if you bring the stuff you need riveting to my office in Gateshead I can do it for you. Office is near the Metro Centre. I am in the office every Thursday.
