Happy Sunday all,
Just wanted to gauge forum opinion on whether you thought LOTR would be remastered at some point? It’s on my list to buy at some point but would prefer to hang on for it to be re-done if you thought it was on the cards? Thoughts?

Potentially, but you could wait years and it still not get remastered. Tron remastered rumours have been around for years and still nothing.

Until you hear something concrete I'd look to get an original. At worst you lose some money selling it to get the remastered.

I asked someone at Stern last year and they were not committing to it.

I was in exactly the same position as you but in the end I just got an original.

Probably the only game I'd consider getting both the remake and keeping the original but it's such a tough game to redo given the license and the way Stern built it and packed it out.

If I had to guess I'd say there was a 30% chance they'd remake it but could never happen.

No chance, the rights are now all over the place
Thanks - yes that could be the main issue. I think if they could sort that then it could be more likely as the machine still seems massively popular in the US and keeps its value pretty well

But the franchise is being milked for all it’s worth so if stern stump up the reddies I’d imagine there would be chance.
And as themes go you can get much better!

Not a chance Amazon had to cough up 250 million for the rights to the TV shows.

When the stern machine came out the deal was probably done before the films where finished, when lotr was in a different place regarding the rights

Rumours on pinside appear to suggest it's TWD next, followed by either GB or Tron.

If you're after a LOTR you may be waiting a while for a remake

Would seem weird no? For them to make a brand new game based around Dungeons and Dragons and then release a remake of a game based around the same ideas? I get it is not apples for apples. I also don't think the world is calling out for a remake. The original seems to come up fairly often and get passed around. But I may be wrong on that.

It certainly seemed worthwhile in the past as they made 5000+ in the original run and then did 500 Limited editions 6 years later. Plus the game has always been a top 15 game in the Pinside ratings (if that’s anything to go by).
I agree with the earlier comments that’s it’s likely to be out of reach due to licensing issues so I’m good with looking out for a nice reconditioned one when funds allow. Good to get all your opinions - thanks!

The licence then was with Warner brothers who licensed lotr for everything including gambling machines, I believe now part of the licence is now back with the Tolkien estate and some Swedish company. The Tolkien estate weren't happy with how the rights where dished out , a lot has changed regarding these rights, the le came out around 2005, there is no chance of this game being remade, even if they could sort out the rights to the theme, they would then have to negotiate with all the actors, in the original one I believe the dwarf was a problem which they got a sound alike. It would be the same issue as with the original back to the future. Further complications and actor has since passed, so you would have to negotiate with their estate.

I might be wrong and miracles happen, but if stern wouldn't pay the huge licence cost for harry potter, lotr will be similar amounts, it just wouldn't be viable
