Hi guys,

as I promised to Rich, I'll make a small reprot of the works on his TOM playfield..

So lets start over...playfield is in usual condition for a TOM....the part just above the flipeprs shows the usual wear around the inserts....nearley EVERY insert shows small cracks around them and all of them has to be refurbished to make it really perfect and that is what makes the most work: large areas are a minor issue compared to refurbishing those tiny little cracks that go through variuos colors....

What have been done so far:

- Mylar removed with freezing spray

- glue was removed

- playfield sanded

- All wear has been filled with a 2k filler and sanded again to receive a nice surface

- playfield has been clear coated once and must be clear coated one more time to receive anice surface to work on

Here are the pics - more to follow in aprox 10-12 days when the next layer of clear coat ist dry...then we can start refurbishment...

Questions are always welcome

Have fun guys

Before restoration begins we:

- take off mylar

- take off the glue

- fill the worn parts with a 2k filler

- get rid off swirls where possible

- sand the complete playfield

- clear coat it hopefully just once but under normal circumstances twice to receive a perfect flat surface*

* you simply cannot start restoration straight away, cause there are always gaps around inserts, also at the parts that have been filled (...) the airbrush paint would always flow into those gaps and the result simply cannot be nice

till very soon

So...finally...lets proceed. Playfield is nearley finished now - only finishing of the final clear coat has to be done. So I'm gonna explain at least some things we have deone with the playfield. Really SORRY but due to very little time at the moment I simply cannot explain every detail but I think pics and explanations should give you a nice impression how this work was done....lets start over...

so every tiny little scratch has to be removed (at least in my opinion) - one color after the other have to be cut out and resprayed...lets start over with grey parts..grey2JPG-1.jpg

and the wooden colors (which are not always easy to match)...

and now probably the most exicting part - renewing the mission area - those always show cracks around the inserts...the ONLY way to get rid of those is to cut out all the mission items first, renew the whole gradient and respray the "methamoporphosis" shadows and lettering tonights illusions. The original silk screen pattern is of course gone afterwards, but I think the result speaks for itself...mission1JPG-1.jpg

some parts of the green area down below also showed some cracks...to renew even those tiny little wear - most of the time the whole area has to be renewed to make it look mint

and FINALLY - the shooter lane which is really the most difficult thing to make it really look genuine. First the wodden color is sprayed - afterwards the wodden structure is sprayed with a darker wodden color to make it look all natural and last but nut least a second and even darker wooden color is sprayed in the shooter lane to make it look like the original wood...

just epic!
wait til you see the plating :-) Its going to be a seriously nice looking TOM. Came in at under the cost for a replacement playfield too (if such a thing were even available).

Amazing. I'm so glad there is a service out there for this. If you got the money and inclination, any playfield can be saved.

I nearly cried when I saw those pictures. Absolutely awesome. Personally, I wouldn't dare play on it now. However, if I did play will it be any good? It looks like a piece of glass! How fast is that ball going to move?
