Seemed to be a divisive topic in Chris B's thread, so thought I'd start a poll...

Personally I think it looks great especially in darker colours. Brighter ones can be a bit "in your face" due to the large area. A black door definitely looks drab on a bright machine (e.g. AIQ) - almost like some censorship lol

Anyway I'm curious to hear people's opinions, let me know if any options are missing in the poll!

Just out of curiosity, are powder coating techniques able to 'fill in' the artwork of the cabinet, as with the home version of Bally Fireball, which didn't have a door at all?

It’s a tough one, as it’s hard to picture what it will look like without getting it done. I think powder coated coin doors that match the rest of the armour do look really good on certain games.

But on some I think it can be to much and abit in your face, so in those instances, black is the way to go for me.

Well the best coin door I've seen recently was on @stumblor Fish Tales.

Completely subjective of course and no correct answer on this one. Personally I'd powdercoat my coin door, front door, dishwasher door and grandmother given the chance.

Powder coat needs to cure in an oven and is generally only suitable for metal parts. Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question though.

That one was polished chrome, right? Looks great until someone lays a finger on it and leaves a mark 😅

Your gran sounds pretty metal! 😎🤘

for me the coin door is like a number plate on a car. You really don't want it to be there. So keeping the coin door black and dark and out of the way looks the best. although the stainless steel versions of SS/EM's also looks cool.

I think powder coating them, especially with light colours, looks atrocious.

I wonder if we will start seeing machines without coin doors, as the Fireball that Jay mentioned above... Especially with contactless payments and connected machines, even for an op coins won't be required.

Browsing pinside, I saw some people only do the coin door frame and I must say that looks pretty sweet:

Thanks dude. 🐟

I'm generally in the 'leave it stock' camp when it comes to the coin door, as I think way too often people go completely mental, choose a garish colour, team it up with some undercab lighting and think it all looks great. I prefer take a 'less is more' approach, usually. Exceptions of course, with FT being one of them, where I felt that chrome everything was the right choice.

You never can tell though, although doing mockups will get you most of the way there. This isn't a coin door, but before doing the armour for FT, @MadNat and I were having a debate about whether or not I should chrome the apron. He thought I was crazy, then I showed him this.

not my machine - this is just a mockup I did in PS

not my apron, just a chrome apron I found and then added pictures of my custom apron stickers

Final result. As you can see, pretty close to the original mockup

This is what I'm working towards for my FT. 🐠

With FT, in my opinion, more is more, i.e. it's supposed to be a garish machine.

Here we've got a chrome coin door with lime green armour.

Without any irony and with absolute awareness that I have an Elvira with blood drips and green slime airbrushing.....

That FT is a bit much for me 😂.

I think it's the mixture of chrome AND the green powder coating.
Leave it chrome or powder coat.

That being said it's not really my business.

It's you spending a few grand so you should listen to precisely nobody and do what you want.

It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks anymore than whether they approve of your choice of car colour, sofa upholstery or fashion sense (I do have excellent taste in T-shirts though 😉).

If in doubt powder coat everything 😎

Or get a professional artist to paint it..
somewhere there is a scare stiff & MM that the coin doors just blend into the cabinet.. very well done.. need to find the pics

However, if we did this we would literally have nothing to talk about 😂

I only know of the MB one that MikeD did on his high end restoration in 2012;

If the coin door is not done is just looks unfinished.
Just picking a colour for Star Trek, he has a new one in which is black with silver flake which I think will work well.
