Anyone had any experience with a playfield protector. Just looking at a few. They work out about £100. Fitting issues, playing issues and wether they do the job designed.
Disscuss

They stay put by a static charge and are secured by posts on the playfield, machines such as Fish Tales don't have many posts and so this can mean they move a bit.. Other than that, I've not heard of any issues, nice glossy finish and quieter ball rolling.

I think theres a review on Pinball News.

does change the dynamics of the ball. it's like playing on a newly clearcoated playfield. it might calm down , once it has a few hundred games on.

Are they really needed in the home market ?
Surely you are never going to wear a playfield out on a home use machine.

Might be a good idea for machines which have had factory fitted mylar removed. BK2K for example. Or for people that have spent an age doing playfield touch-ups, and are now terrified of screwing up the clearcoat. Ahem.

Martin's game was a dream to play at the London comp and I was very impressed with it. :D

Get it clearcoated Paul. You pussy.
I know a guy who has clearcoated a couple of p/fields for me with great results.
A pro job to clearcoat it is trouble free and nothing to worry about.

I have a few machines that I have what I consider nice playfields and I want to keep them that way. Even on home use every play has a potential of causing some damage.
The easy option appears to be a protector and i think ill go down this route on playfields that need no repairs like my acdc. However my bk2k needs a bit of work to paint and inserts so will probably get that clearcoated.
Would love a finish like johns circus

Thought I would give this a go with my TOTAN. I was stripping it anyway and if it doesn't work out it can be removed.

Installation was easy, and it looks wicked. I'll update when it's all back together.

At a guess it's to stop the sling switches getting caught as the protector is lowered on to the playfield...

That looks great Steve. I miss the sounds of my old Totan more than any other machine. Your looks to have a pretty decent playfield too.

Wont you get the ball sitting in that edge where the lamp is ? that will surely affect the roll of the ball same with the genie magnet ?

Let us know how it plays when back together

The genie magnet and the spinning lamp disc can both be adjusted to sit level with the playfield if needs be.

Oooh... interesting! I read the article on pinballnews.com when it was first published but it's only after reading this thread that I've realised/noticed that these protectors aren't sticky! Just a nice thick sheet of Bayer Makrolon (polycarbonate).

@Steve - I don't supposed you recall from the removable film which type of Makrolon is used? Any idea of thickness? There's Makrolon FD, AR, FI, GP, MG, OP, SL and Hygard. Hygard even comes in bullet-resistant!

the wrapper is still there, I'll have a look tonight!

That's looking blooming good and at a reasonable price too!!!! Deffo a consideration for anyone looking to make things look clean and shiny!!!

I wonder if any blemishes could be reverse sprayed on the overlay and this would therefore make things look perfect again....

Is it possible to wear a playfield if it is kept clean and waxed properly?

According to book-keeping, my Star Wars has had nearly 13,500 plays on it in the time I have owned it (plus that thousands it had in its previous life) and the artwork remains wear free. It gets a wax every 1000 plays on average I guess

I wonder why there is no protection for both the captive balls.
That must be the highest wear area on the playfield .

It's Makrolon GP clear 099 0.75mm.

Maybe it's because it's not visible? I expected to find wear in this area when I stripped it down, but it's amazingly clean with not even a ball track.

There is always areas you can't reach when you clean/wax and the dirt gathers there to be picked up by a passing ball and transported around the playfield. Over time it acts like fine abrasive and dulls the surface until it becomes matt.

Wow, this stuff is seriously tuff!

Makrolon® GP (general purpose) is a clear, polished surface, UV-stabilized polycarbonate for use in sign and glazing applications. Offering high performance and economy, this sheet meets or exceeds the physical properties of any product in its class. Typical applications include impact-resistant windows, signage, machine guards, barriers and partitions.

The Ball Drop Test data on 1/8" Makrolon compared to 1/4" glass and acrylic makes for interesting viewing. Basically, this is a ruddy tough bit of plastic!

Im still very tempted to get some. The pics with it installed look bloomin ace

That graph tells me it won't suffer 'ball dents' like wood does!

Also I have a couple of sunken inserts, I'm thinking this protector will even everything out?

Steve, I'd be interested to know whether it affects the operation of any pf magnets or are they all cut out? Obviously the genie magnet will be cut out but I'm thinking more about the one above the lock....is it covered by the protector?

Edit: Just looked at the pics above and it appears the protector covers the ball lock magnet....noticed any difference with it on?
