My short journey in pinball so far

Some time in March or a bit earlier this year– I can’t remember what led me to it but I bought Pinballfx3 on Steam. I use to play a pinball game on our zx Spectrum as a kid and later played Space Cadet pinball on PC so knew I’d enjoy it, but I didn’t know how much…I very quickly decide I like pinball. We were planning to move to a bigger house in June and I decided I wanted some of that extra space for a pinball machine! A bit of googling led me to this forum where I read lots of threads and discover vpins. I had space for 1 machine at the new house and considered a real machine but having not played a pinball machine in about 25-30? years and only played a couple a few times back then, I decide why would I have 1 machine when I could have 100’s in 1 vpin?

18th April - I herniated a disc, so badly that I couldn’t move my legs and had to be taken to hospital by ambulance. I spent a lot of time playing Williams pinball app while resting in bed. This just confirms to me I definitely want to dedicate a space for a vpin in the new house.

4th May - a vpin comes up for sale on a local Facebook page. It needed updating but seemed a good price. My herniated disc had got a little better but I still couldn’t sit at all so I sent hubby to check it out and he decided it looked good enough and bought it. The timing was terrible as we hadn’t moved yet and really didn’t have space for this old Williams widebody but hubby got rid of the dining table we had decided we didn’t want at the new house and put the vpin in the dining room until the move. At this point with my back I could stand for about 20-30 minutes at a time so I spent that time playing on the vpin and my time lying down researching how to do upgrades to the cab and software. When I started to feel a bit better I managed to do some of the upgrades, some had to wait though. I also decided that playing is really fun! Plans for a spare bed in the new house get scrapped for pinball machine space and I put an order in for a NIB with Pinball Heaven.

8th July - JP2 Premium arrives in the new house! …But playing 1 is not enough and 2 weeks after our 2nd jabs we make a few trips to Tilt and Electric Circus to play more machines! I start looking at everything in terms of pinball machines. Cost of things are measured in pinball machines, I consider a new car, ‘I could get 3 pinball machines for that, are you crazy!’ Space is measured in pinball machines, doing our daily walk I look at double garages and outbuildings and I say ‘how many pinball machines do you think you can fit in there?’ I wander round our house visually measuring spaces for pinball machines ‘why do we have a separate shower and bath when we don’t have baths, we could fit a pinball machine there!’ Oh dear god help me the obsession has truly taken hold 🤣

20th August - I put a deposit down for another NIB. That’s it, no more space for any more pins when this arrives! Any more will have to be on a one in, one out basis I say.

24th August - TMNT pops up on the forum. Hubby hasn’t shown much interest in pinball past (luckily for me) encouraging my new hobby, but we played this at Electric Circus and he said ‘I’d play that’. I’d love if he got into pinball too, soooo… offer made.

I should have listened when people said you’ll never be done with just 1, they breed. I didn’t expect them to breed quite this quickly!

I have space for 3 machines, now I’m going to have 4. I’m off to try and work out where to put the extra machine!

Ha haaa! Another one bitten by the bug.

I hope you're coming to UKPinfest this weekend. There's some for sale too!

Unfortunately even though it’s only an hour away I can’t make it this year. Don’t tempt me with more machines! I’m already eying up the garage as extra space 😆

Love the thought process that everything is measured in pinball machines 😂

Hey! :)

I'm another person who's got into pinball recently due to the Williams app.

We have a lot of board games (currently selling a load) and have always fancied a games room with custom shelving and a gaming table. Anyway, my husband and I were playing a pinball-themed board game (not a good one) and we chatted about how we'd always imagined a pinball table in our games room.

Anyway, we downloaded the Williams app and now own a Fish Tales!

We have room for two machines in our house currently - three if we build a games room. The third will definitely be Medieval Madness, if I can afford a copy - my four-year-old son is obsessed with that one.

MM was also my favourite on the app/ fx3. It’s shifted a little since playing more real pins but it’ll always be up there as one of my favourites and I’d love to own one, one day.

We’re also into board games, just picked up a copy of Descent 3 and looking forward to playing that. Also started a Gloomhaven campaign with my brother before covid so looking forward to finally getting back to that next month. Got a wardrobe full of other games, smallworld, ticket to ride, pandemic, dungeon pets etc etc yeah I’m kind of a nerd

We also had a Gloomhaven campaign going with a friend pre-pandemic. Also hoping to get back into that once things improve - I need my mum here regularly again so we have some weekend childcare; she's a little scared travelling due to COVID.

I'm just about to sell Descent: First Edition. I played Descent 2nd edition, but it didn't really fly with us, but we enjoy Imperial Assault (similar game, but with a Star Wars theme).

We decided we preferred AFM to MM as a real pin, but our four year old is scared of the martians. He absolutely loves MM, though, and really gets the idea of firing pinballs to make the castle blow up. He played real MM for nearly an hour at Flip Out (Croydon) on Sunday, and was drawing castles and drawbridges in chalk on our patio earlier today.

As long he doesn’t start telling people he likes to blow up castles you should be ok 😆 1st edition was by far the most popular with us, so many hours into that one but 2nd never even got finished. Interested to see how the 3rd measures up.

Pinball Arcade/Pinball FX has a lot to answer for. I know many people who started that way, me included.
I find it incredible that Stern doesn't licence Pinball Arcade/Pinball FX versions of their newer machines. They would make a fortune from people who want a physical version of something they've played online.

We pulled the lever on Fish Tales because we knew it so well from the Williams app...

There’s a lot of recreations you can download from the vpforums that aren’t available on those apps. It’s fairly simple to set up if you’re just doing it on pc. Some of the latest ones you can get are GotG, B66, a version of Deadpool, Ghostbusters etc

Yeah, apparently there's a way to emulate (awkwardly) on Mac. I really need to get that set up because Mac incompatibility comes up A LOT.

Google for stern pinball arcade If you want virtual editions of stern games. The only one I play is Star Trek but it’s so far from the real thing.

and MM is one of the greats!

I've got Stern Pinball Arcade on iOS.

Most of the games on there are... excuse my French, total s**t... with the exceptions of Ghostbusters and Star Trek.

I've never played Star Trek in person, but I have played Ghostbusters and it is *much* better as a real-life pin.

Stern Star Trek online feels like a cut-down, speeded-up version of ST:TNG, which means it is definitely a very good game, and most of what I play online.

Apart from GB and ST, most of the Stern games are pretty old (and mostly steaming junk, as well...) There's nothing like LoTR, JP2 or A:IQ, for example.

The Williams app has more playable tables - there are definitely more gems than junk on there, with the rare exceptions like Dr Dude, Party Zone and Hurricane.

It reignited my love of pinball also, so much that I ended up running a PinballFX3 league on Reddit, and now have my own home and four pins 😂

Hmm AC/DC mustang and HRC aren’t bad either I thought it had stern electronic games on it must have remembered wrongly.

Well, it’s not all bad. Looks like they recently added Whoa Nellie! Big Juicy Melons! to the already-stellar line-up of Stern machines featured on Stern PBA/Pinball Arcade 😂🍉

Interesting review of tables on Pinball Arcade. It also lists the 63 tables out of the originally available 100 which were permanently de-listed in 2018 due to licensing issues, which is a crying shame. Some of the de-listed games can still be had on the PS4 by buying a physical disk of Season 1 and 2.
