I'm looking for a good LED for GI, I currently use standard frosted LEDs but I'm after something that is brighter and spreads the light better.

What do people generally use?

I am currently trialing some LED's that are copies of the ones that modern Stern use in their GI (t#44 base win SMD LED with a clear dome cap)

The warm white, red and green have been successful in my Gorgar backbox, and I have some cold white samples on order (which should be brigher like Stern GI)

MOQ is 500, so if you want to share an order let me know.

You can see them in a couple of my machines if you want a look. Should be aprox 50p per LED depending on postage and currency fluctuation

I'd be interested too, would like to brighten up the playfields on BSD and FT, I like to play in the dark which is no problem with modern Sterns.

Interesting, would be nice to see them in warm white too.

I have warm white in Gorgars backbox. These are no where near as bright as the Stern cold white, but they look more natural on an early 80's game, hence I have also ordered cold white to try in some DMD games

Lol it'll be that compromise between cost and quality then, which usually doesn't end well..

Apologies - i was answering Carl's initial "what's a good LED for GI" :)

whichever way you spin it Luke, 25 machines worth isn't gonna be cheap :D

Fair comments :)

I assume you have personal experience with the comet pinball LEDs? Are they good enough to justify the price?

Something tells me Stern aren't paying $2 a bulb and they seem OK? :)

Stern don't use those Comet ones, the Stern ones look identical to the ones I am sampling, which means they may or may not be made in the same Chinese factory. Once I have some of the cold white in my hand, I will be able to do a direct comparison by installing a few in a Stern machine and seeing how the light pattern and brightness compare. I shall share my findings :)

I am finding it really really difficult to show these LEDs on camera in a way that is representative.

When I put them in a backbox alongside some really burnt out dull bulbs, when I took the picture, the bulbs looked brighter, but in reality the LED's were 2-3 times brighter. I guess @replicas will be able to give an independent view of them.

Personally happy with them and going to get more of them.

Here is a quick pic

They are good but until I get them side by side with the Stern ones I can't be sure if they are as good.

I'd rather have someone else (such as Daz) give an independent opinion, as I don't want to trick anyone into buying them if they are crap. But I personally like them and will definitely be buying more.

I actually prefer warm white as they look more natural especially on older games, but I find the cold white work well to highlight certain areas

Well according to comets website, they have a super "double patent" on them so there is no way the factory will be able to sell me any ;)

Hi Carl, I've just been in the same dilemma and ordered about half about a dozen of those optimus Maximus whatever the hell there called bulds in warm and cool white. Took over a month to come and was expecting big things from all the hype, in a nutshell I wasn't impressed when comparing to pinball heaven superbrights. The intensity was no more and if I remember correctly you got a slight more spread of light closer to the buld and not real difference at distance. I will not be buying these again. Think the ones I'll end up going for are the 1st stop pin ball ghost buster domes. Haven't compared them yet to the pin heaven but to the mega bright 4 led bulbs also from 1st stop and they seem as bright but obviously have the dome like normal bulbs so look original and don't seem to catch your eye as much if seen without a plastic covering them up. These have a single larger led in them. They are 99p each and the megas are 89 I think.

I haven't tried the cool white as I wanted the warm natural look which I really like on the standard baywatch and these are very close but just that bit nicer and brighter so the cools should be promising.

Here is a pic with 2 gbds behind the slings and 3 normal new bulbs under the lower outlane plastics, you would def notice the difference in person, hope this helps
