I have a brand new faulty 12v version (APD-128G032A) to add to the pile now too. Don't ask!

Wow, you're not having a lot of luck are you!

No lol I'm £610 in on faulty DMDs so far. I have another coming Friday so third time lucky.

Here's a pic from when I had my first LED one working for a few hours until I blew it up :(

Vishay customer service, nice story

Well, I took a punt a few weeks back and bought the 2 non-working displays from tyke. 5v Vishay LED and 12v Vishay Plasma. Tried out the 5v one and nearly burnt myself on a couple of the ICs after about 2 seconds. That one is all surface mount stuff and I can't do that. I'm guessing the display got (considerably more) than 5v at some point. The 12v was just completely dead.

I dropped an email to Vishay, asking for the detailed schematics as you can't download them from their website. Was told that they were not available to customers. So I asked if they can be repaired. They said I would need to cover shipping to the US for them to be inspected, then they would examine the displays and let me know if they were repairable and if so how much. I'd then need to cover that plus return shipping. That was rapidly getting to the point where it wasn't worth the chance or the cost, so I mentioned it seemed a shame to throw away what are potentially good displays. They passed the email on to an engineer who took pity on me and sent me the schematics of the plasma display, along with some notes and ideas of things to check (I have a meter and an o'scope). We were able to determine that the 5v display was basically fried, but that the 12v display was working from an electronics point of view and the problem was with the glass. In a further email I mentioned the serial numbers on the displays, at which point he said that the plasma display was still covered by the warranty as it was built last April. The 5v one might have been covered date-wise, but he didn't consider the kind of damage to be their responsibility.

So, to cut the rest of the story short, Vishay arranged collection of the plasma display from me here in the UK, had it shipped to the US, repaired and sent back all at their cost. Great customer service, although it took more paperwork than I ever dreamed possible.

So for £90 plus a couple of hours poking around with a scope and some emails to/from Vishay I've got a nice working 12v plasma DMD. This is going to go in my F14 project. I wanted a plasma display in there, but don't have all the right voltages for a normal one, so settled for PinLED some time ago. Now I can stick with plasma. Yay!

Thanks Tyke !

What are you doing with the 5v one, if the SMT chips are available may be worth looking at ...

I'm not intending to do anything with the 5v one, I don't have the gear to do SMT work. You can have the display for the price of posting it to you, if you're interested.

It will work with Popeye as its a standard DMD size. You would have to power it via an alternative source though as it only takes 5v.

I see. Thank you. I should probably stick to something straightforward. Anything for an easy life! Having said that, suggestions on how to provide alternate power are welcome!
