It's all a bit political

I didn't want to derail the threads on what are clearly important issues for those involved.

However, isn't it a shame that politics rear their head in a hobby which really should be fun.

First of all we had the thread about competitions and now the hall of fame one.

I can't pretend to know anything about either in great detail. I don't understand about tournaments, ranking points and anything else for that matter but I do know that the row put me off wanting to be involved in any of it. What is clear is that everyone involved loves competitive pinball.

I know next to nothing about the hall of fame, it's origins or when it should or shouldn't take place. What is clear is that everyone who is invested in it loves pinball so it's a massive shame.

I might be new to this hobby but I'm nearly 50 and have seen plenty of other hobbies and pastimes go the same way and the destination is always divisive.

These things always fragment and end in splits which is a huge shame in such a small hobby.

I've seen it in fishing where there was a split following two people arguing and one failing to ratify the others tournament. The Camping club v The camping and caravanning club is the stuff of legend and has resulted in lawsuits and death threats (yes seriously 😂). My old astronomy club had splintered from the original one following a 20 year friendship which turned into a 10 year feud.

Honestly, there are so many examples of hobbies becoming fragmented and it would be a shame if that happened here.

None of it is worth falling out over.

Claire and David chasing otters on a bicycle and Colin trying to impress nurses by shaving off his moustache is far more entertaining.

Whatever the background, Gary Flower holds the trademark and therefore the 'committee' need to make an agreement with Gary or not use the term UK Pinball hall of Fame or similar.

David

P.S. The other thread as descended into playground comments hence response here.

Great write up Kris, I was thinking the same thing this morning. It's all rather shambolic and embarrassing really...

You’re right gonzo inevitably ends this way, Some people will always want to take something that should be fun and sociable, and turn it in to a bit of a personal power trip to get the attention they obviously crave . Golf clubs are horrendous for it !

In the real world - this term has zero value and I wonder why it was trademarked.

All of it is pointless.

Next people will be saying you need to pay Gary a license fee for using it.

Until last year there was not one for a good few years.

I doubt the 'TWIPYS' name is trademarked. I could google it but just could not be bothered.

Go and enjoy yourselves.

I don't have anything to add except why would you let politics (like the UKCS drama) put you off playing competitive pinball?

I'm not fussed about points except for friendly rivalries and the satisfaction of seeing my progress.

I don't think those who have dismissed competitive play have played much other than the bigger events, like UK Pinfest. Go to a more grassroots event that are the bread and butter or our really friendly UK scene.
A Electric Circus, Medway, Swavesey or Pinhaus comp.

They're primarily about the fun and people involved. You can ignore the politics and drama with regards to the points farming, and like most of us, just play because playing with people is the best.

I love the atmosphere and social nature of these events, don't write them off because of some personalities who make it appear too serious

❤️ Our Pinball scene is about people

@Gonzo im putting you forward for the pinballinfo hall of fame™ for that post 👏

Can you do both the new and the old one please mate . . . . I need both bases covered.

For the record I'm happy to be included in the UK Hall of Fame and The British Hall of outstanding pinball merit.

I shall also be entering competitive tournaments at the UK Masters, British Pinball open and Guernsey Flipper International Challenge.

As the top ranked player in the south side of my village I'm also confident of lifting the Sandhurst Vase for the third consecutive year.

It's all got a bit 'People's Front of Judea' 😁

Whilst probably a bit of a pita for those involved, it's comedy gold for the rest of us I guess. It reminds me of this scene from The Thick Of It:

So you're the common link in all these hobbies going tits up?

Is that what you're saying? 🤣

First up, this is the breakaway forum! Second, had that individual on ignore for months. Maybe if more people used the feature a few less flame wars would ensue.

I want to hear more about the astronomy club drama, I imagine it went something like this....

Gonzo: look at that star

Fellow enthusiast: its a comet

Gonzo: no, its a star

Fellow enthusiast: its an f'in comet!

Gonzo: Shut up you twat, I'll shove that telescope up ya ****

Well said Gonzo & others, life is too short

Most of my clubs are still running as there's only me in them, Howvere sometimes it gets tense and issues come up and I am not sure if it's going to break up.

I have a competitive nature however my expectations are well above my abilities, as I set the score to beat JP last year it's my PB all-time best of 3 Million, So see if you can get lower than that, I have tried since just can't get close now, even just plunging the ball :-)

Finally for me what I want to say is that I have met some great people here that have gone out of their way to help me. this is why I love this hobby and that's what I want to stay with.

There’s always cliques and drama in any hobby.

I remember when pretty much everyone decamped from the yahoo group to this forum. There were a couple of hold outs who were adamant that a forum was a **** idea and they still kept posting in yahoo despite there being about 6 posts a year.

Pinball is pretty mild compared to most music groups I’ve been involved in. There’s actually pretty little gate keeping here. People seem to go out of their way to welcome new people to the forum (and into their houses). Compare that to grown men losing their **** because someone wearing the “wrong” t shirt 😂
