Is there a better rule set than AFM for all levels of play?

Subjective I know but AFM seems to have a rule set that a total first time player can enjoy as witnessed by friends who have never played a game ever. Once they destroy the saucer they are hooked.

For intermediates you have the 6 non linear modes and all are satisfying and not easy. Attack from mars is really, really difficult on 3 ball ( add new p/f, 8 degree plus pitch, white rubber and make that super hard

And then of course if you do get all 6 you have the chance for the elusive rule the universe, which is an epic wizard mode ( so people say as doubt if I will ever get it unless I take the glass off:suspect:

For me, no game gets me hitting the start button for 'just one more game' and at times it frustrates me so much that I think about possibly selling it!

There are criticisms in that the p/f art could have been better for sure and do I have to hit the saucer so many times to attack mars, or maybe that is just my error ridden play:)

There probably are better rule sets out there but wondering if I am missing any of a similar nature??

While I do love AFM, I think that MM takes the crown for mass appeal - its essentially AFM with a few more modes and a more impressive toy for non-pinheads. Similar to AFM, destroying all the castles is a challenge (at least for me!) and BFTK isn't going to appear that often. My dad has them both side by side and although we probably play AFM more when its just the two of us (its faster), whenever others are in the room MM gets the most attention. Also, Barnyard Multiball throws in a little extra thing for the more serious player to aim for.

I'd also rank CV up there. The ringmaster lifting up and throwing the ball is a great 'wow' moment that sucks people in, and highwire multiball is achievable by most. For better players its all about stacking the multiballs, drawing out the final Ringmaster battle, and scoring big on Party Multiball. I'm in no way suggesting its a difficult game, but it appeals to the unexperienced while giving the better player some interesting options.

Interesting thread. I'd be curious to know people's views on sub-£1500 machines with good rule sets as I'm trying to figure out what my next machine should be. I've got the nostalgia pin (Taxi), now I want something with modes and goals that are a little more involved and challenging.

What are your thoughts?

I'd be up for swapping machines for a while, especially if someone reckons they can fix the dreaded issue with plunging more than 50k in the spinout!

It's a keeper for me though. Spent a summer playing it in Toronto back in 1990 and had to get one.

Stronger plunger spring should sort the problem of not being able to get past 50k out, they do weaken over time. Or it could have been changed for the wrong one.

What about Fish Tales? Great modes and a very hard super jackpot. Very addictive pin if you can get past theme and music.

It's getting harder and harder to work out exactly what machines are under 1.5k at this point. I would have said White Water a year or so ago but the prices on that one seem to be climbing. Maybe STTNG if you can get past the theme. I recently sold a TSPP for 1850 and that machine has an incredible ruleset, but despite the theme I'd say its a more experienced players machine. Not so sure I'd agree on Fish Tales appealing to all levels of play, but maybe the examples I've played have been set up to be difficult. That or I'm just **** at it! I do quite like it despite that though. The Shadow seems to hover around 1.5k but again its not so accessible for those new to pinball.

Edit: Forgot World Cup Soccer 94. The backglass is terrible but the game is great. Great value for the price it commands. Out of Popadiuk's games I definitely prefer it to ToM. For gameplay I'd rank it about as good as TOTAN, but not as good as CV.

Last Shadow on ebay a few days ago went for 1K.

Seriously there are plenty of games about and selling for 1K or less. Even on the bay. A quick search of finished auctions showed plenty of dmd games sub 1K.

Sorry, meant to say TS hovers around 1k. Had 1.5k on the mind.

Also, I know most can't stand it but I have a bit of a soft spot for RCT and a nice one went for just over 1k recently. If I had the room I probably would have put a bid in towards the end. Wouldn't recommend it buying one blind but I think it gets more crap than it deserves. Not a great machine but I'm a sucker for the ramps, and I used to love the PC game.

+1 for TS and WCS....I'd also chuck RS in as well

What about Dirty Harry? After playing Ive's at Swavesey I'd say thats a cracking pin for the money...if you can find one for sale

Indianapolis 500 and Roadshow. Great games for the money with good, varied rules.
