Is Stern going to go down the DLC route?

Could they do it, yes, would they do it, I don’t think so. Some dodgy maths ahead but I think they would have to charge serious money to make it worthwhile. If you assume 5k units for an average title, maybe 20% of whom would pay for the DLC - market of maybe 1,000 customers. Need to then spend the money to develop and test the new code, any extra licensing fee, advertise the DLC, updates for the code going forward… if you’re not charging $200+ I just don’t think it would make any money. And for that to be enticing it would need to significantly change the game.

Video game developers can sell DLC for £20 because their player base is magnitudes larger.

I think their market share is already under pressure. The last thing they need to do is give customers another reason to choose an alternative manufacturer.

My personal feeling, it’s just too obvious not to try it.

IC is there and established. It’s already hooking into the games. It doesn’t take a huge step to the next stage now for them.

Alan,

Last week Kai and I were discussing stern insider Connectivity Persistence on Venom and his view was that this is the thin end of the wedge for dlc. He said that dlc is what ruined his online video gaming experience as a kid and would likely ruin the pinball experience for many if it was pursued.

It's really not a big technical jump from the current free of charge connectivity persistence on venom to charging for it through insider connected to allowing players a different in game experience controlled by dlc accessible and paid for via insider connected. Connectivity Persistence may just be the trial for bigger things to come.
