Indy 500 problems

I recently received an Indy 500 machine with bulbs swapped out for led. I absolutely love it, however it has some serious faults which I’d appreciate some feedback on….

1. Constant humming / droning noise, really off putting in the games room. No issue with other machines in same room.

2. LCD was working , then seemed to be dropping pixels, then eventually failed / complete garbage in the screen - not readable. Sometimes just blank.

It’s under warranty anyway so hoping for a quick resolution to both, however if you have any experience with similar problems I’d love to hear about it. I am new to this hobby , how quickly might these issue be to resolve ?

I bought it from home leisure direct, did if any of you sell the machine back to them ….. didn’t know if this machine had previous owners on here.

Under warranty?
Home leisure direct?

If it is then good luck. They dont have good aftersales.

The hum could be transformer or coming from the dmd or speakers.

I take it you mean dmd? Or is it a replacement colordmd?!

Sorry yeah it’s a dot matrix display , would love a colour dmd!

Ok that’s not a great start thanks for the heads up. :/

Literally had 10-20 plays out of it now screen is dead. Is this something an engineer might be able to swap out for the colour one relatively easily ?

Check the ribbon cable from the dmd to the board.
one of my Williams is noisy from the transformer very common.

The hum sounds like it's either your transformer or typical display hum. Regarding your garbled display try reseating your ribbon cables, follow the small one coming from your DMD and you'll find the DMD controller board.

The hum- my AFM was that loud-
Turn off the game,
Take off glass & remove balls
Lift playfield

Tighten the screws securing the transformer to the cabinet.

I did that and the hum went away

I’ve re seated the ribbon cable and seemed ok since 🤷 but only had it in for a few hours.

How big a job / how expensive is a replacement transformer , is this common to have to swap these out ?

Replacing a transformer is rarely needed. Not too hard but dealing with 220VAC is better done by someone who knows what they're doing! By the looks of it your game is working (got power) so I don't see the need for a transformer swap. They're also not so easy to source anymore so don't waste them! :)

Re the hum - have you tried Dave's suggestion of tightening the screws? Try narrowing the cause - does disconnecting the DMD power change anything? (Only disconnect power whilst the machine is off.) Any improper earthing could also be a factor.

Thanks fubar. I didn’t really want to mess with the play surface / slide that out until I’ve spoken to the guys at hld. Don’t want to do anything that puts the warranty at risk.. It is quite a racket , not the sort of thing you’d want switched on in an arcade unfortunately.

As long as you take the balls out you will be fine.

Lifting playfield and pulling it out is part of f pinball ownership.

You need to do this to keep game running & do basic maintenance.

just wanted to say home leisure direct sent an engineer out today and all issues solved apart from the humming, but investigation into that is ongoing. Happy with their aftersales so far, we will see how it all turns out in the end…..

Love the machine, really enjoying it.
