Hi folks,
I know this is a bit of a stupid question but i have got it in my head that i want a MM. I'm going to start saving but how much realistically will i pick up a half decent one for or do i just forget the whole thing.
I see them come up for £10k but i would never pay that for a pin but if i thought i could get one around £6k i would take the plunge.
What are my chances?
Cheers Adie

I don't think it's a case of how much it will cost but more a case of how far you are willing to go to win the auction or being high enough in the loop to get 1st refusal, I think £5.5-6k will get you any MM that comes along if you are in the right place at the right time, I also have it at the back of my want list although fortunately I was burnt out with the hunt early last year (can take it or leave it now), I have since turned my nose up at two as I did not think they were worth the asking price vs condition. Sellers of MM’s are notorious for asking stupid prices which are never achieved or other less than honorable tactics, there was one late 2011 that was purchased for 5k with an attempted flip at 8k weeks later only to sell at 5.5k, personal experiences include sellers that pitch one buyer against another pushing the price up (the unlucky winner was not happy by all accounts) and finally the "bit of a dawg" with a 007 style top secret price tag, the seller refusing to publically release the asking price insisting that potential buyers travel across the country to view the machine before the price was disclosed, such is the mentality of some MM sellers, it’s almost as if they have become Gollum in possession of the ring, be warned and good luck : - )

Ultimately, that is a lot of money for a single machine and the efforts described by Dreads would put me off. I know that something is worth what someone will pay but is one machine really that much better than all the others? Rarity plays its part and I do like the machine, feeling it has a good general allround appeal but can't help but always spend more time on an Attack From Mars which feels like a very similar game but visually more appealing to my eyes.

Yeah, I gave up on one a couple of years ago after an incident . I agreed a price with a seller and he demanded the full price up front paid into his bank account by that evening or he was selling it to someone else. Needless to say he got told where to go.

Turns out he was a genuine seller but I'd rather do without than deal with someone that pushy

Its a shame they are so costly, but they do come up for sale quite often. I hope to have one myself one day, but Predator has to come first.

Theres was one on gumtree for 6K in hove. More than likely still there.

Some good points and i really need to have a good go on a few big titles before i take any plunge. I guess i have just decided that come March the big jobs on my house will be done so any spare cash is going for a big pin fund, i'm not going to be in a position to make any moves for 9 or 10 months anyway so who knows what will be around and for how much.
I think once you get to new in box money you have really got to be sure you are getting value for money, and that you are going to get that much enjoyment from it. it is only a game after all and i agree there are lots of tables out there that offer great fun for a fraction of the money. But while some people have machines which just sit there looking great, i play mine everyday and the value and fun i have got from them not even my girlfriend could argue.
I also feel that while it is a lot of money i feel you are only tieing it up for as long as you own the machine as these things do not seem to ever go down in price only up or stay static or at a ceiling, so for that part i am only putting my hard earned cash aside until i sell it again.
I think the point Dreads made is probably the wisest one, i don't ever want to feel i have to sell my soul for something and i have no desire to be held to ransom or messed about. Maybe i am being a little optimistic at thinking when the time comes a fair deal can be struck like i see going down on here or the group every other day.
Time will tell i suppose.

Spot on , Totally agree.

Give other titles a go ,there are some great underrated machines out there that deserve a chance.
Who know a MM might come up while you are playing the field.
MM good machine but there are other which need the love.
Spread the love.
D.

Adie, have you played an AC/DC Premium? For the 6K your talking about dropping on an MM you could buy a NIB one of these and IMHO it's more fun than MM. Don't get me wrong, MM is a great game but at that kind of money there are some other awesome machines out there that I'd buy instead (I'm with Geoff on preferring AFM over MM as well).

Well, this is the current mentality but as with all bubbles the more people who think pinball machines are a sure thing, the less likely that becomes!

MM is not even that rare with over 4000 produced. TOTAN and CV are under 3000 and AFM is around 3300 from memory. I also want a MM, partly because I think it must be better than I currently think it is. But not chasing one and like Dreads, would only buy if condition matched price.

I'm also wary that a MM remake has been rumoured for a couple of years. And despite what MM owners try to tell you, there's not a cat in hells chance they will still be worth £6k if that happens

I also heard this rumour and have seen a recent post where it was 'insinuated' that the MM remake will be happening. Its the thread on pinside that is all about the self build MM project (New MM). After some concern was raised about reproducing certain parts, both Rick from planetary pinball and wayne chimed in on that thread. Here is what Rick had to say:

"guys ... i will predict that new MM remakes will be available, not sure exactly when or not sure exactly for how much and not sure exactly who will do what, but MM would probably be top on the list ... I know as we are the only company WW that has the rights to get them done.

There are still parts that are not available, as well as a number of parts that are available primarily for the current remake. Creating some of these parts is alot of time and $ ... anyways just sayin."

The only reply Mr pinball gave was after someone thought PPS had the rights to make MM. He says:

"we have the rights to complete the original MM orders we received."

The question would be: "How many orders did they receive".
A run of 100 new MM, most of which will go to America will probably not effect the original machines price. If they were to make a thousand for the UK then it would be slightly different. Would you buy a reproduction machine for £6k or an original one for £6k? Personally, I would still go for the old one in good condition but it might cap the upper limits of what people think their machine is worth.
Plus planetary pinball still hasn't made any for sale yet.... Will it play the same, will it have new faults, PF wear issues, etc.

A good run of NIB machines, from different suppliers, with all new themes, at a reasonable price could reduce what people think they can sell a machine for but there are new cars out there for sale but the classic cars still hold their prices.

The bubble may burst for some but if the machine is still good and enjoyed by the owner, unless they have to sell they won't trade it for a fraction of what they paid. That will make them still rare on the market and so possibly ride out any bubble bursting.

I reckon the price would unaffected regardless of whether or not the do another run. Purists will always buy 'rare'' items and will also pay big money them.
Many vintage items are built again often using better technology and materials. Most are still cheaper than an original even if the original is inferior.

I personally would not pay that much for one pin but each to their own and all that.

No, it sold......... for somewhere around 5K I believe. It was round the corner from me and I kind of knew the guy from some time back. I saw it and it wasn't a particularly great example  major wear near the flippers was covered by a very noticeable decal :scared:, dragon was missing, needed a good clean.

You have to bear in mind a lot of the 'value' attributed to MM is pure hype. Its a good game, but to me not a 'great' game. I, like Calamori, would take AFM over it. Try and put some time on it before diving in. But there we have it, all personal opinion anyway. If you have big bucks knocking about, you can get one and prob be pretty sure of seeing yr money back in the future.

Welcome back Ive, Missed ya, Where ya been ?

5k for one like that is daft really.

I also prefer AFM by miles.

I have never even seen a AFM, so that is on my things to do list, also a LOTR, never played. I suppose i am just looking for a big hitter and MM is one i have played and really enjoyed. CV, TOTAN and others mentioned would all be welcome, i just need to try them and see nearer the time and of course what may or not be available.
I am in no rush and will keep saving until something comes up.
Little point saying much more about it until i am in a position to buy.
Thanks for the input.
