I have decided to sell my first pin, my Gottlieb Royal Guard. I have owned this machine for about a year and it would be a cracking addition for those wanting a working pin at a lower budget, or perhaps who are looking to try a low-stakes cosmetic restoration of cabinet or playfield.
Pictures and a video of me playing the game are here:
The good:
- The game is fully working. You won’t find many working pins at this price.
- As far as EMs go, it’s fun to shoot and the “marching” target bank is a nice feature which I haven’t seen on many other machines.
- This machine has a three-chime unit which is very powerful. If you want that vintage arcade sound, it can’t be beaten. I have actually added some homemade felt mufflers (can be seen in the pics) as without them it was even a bit overpowering in a small room.
- Full schematic printed on A1 paper included.
- Also including a few cosmetic pieces I acquired but didn’t fit including new decals for the “fan” targets, and a couple of stand-up target faces in the correct colours (I bought these before realising I’d need a riveter to fit them… clever)
- I have recently replaced all of the pop bumper caps with new ones as the old ones were really faded. Old ones included with sale in case you prefer that look.
- The backglass is in very good condition bar some fading of the reds, like the guards’ jackets.
- The theme would make it a good addition for anybody wanting to lean into a “traditional English” garden bar / man cave!
The not-so-good:
- The only mechanical fault I am aware of is that the match relay does not award a credit on a successful match. Obviously if you have the machine on free play this is not a problem at all, but you just miss out on the knock. Replays are awarded correctly for score / specials.
- Whilst the cabinet is in good and sound condition, it is not painted in its original colours. This pin would be a fantastic candidate for a cabinet repaint, stencils are available for this machine.
- The playfield art is cracked or worn in some places, which I have taken close-up pictures of. The playfield rolls flat, but if you are looking for a museum quality playfield this is not the one for you.
- The door on the back of the head is not original, I would guess most people won’t care but thought I’d mention for completeness.
The unknown:
- Machine has been set to free play throughout my ownership, so I do not know if/how well the coin mech works or which coins it accepts.
Located in Bristol, happy for you to collect or come to try it first, or Martin has delivered here before. Bank transfer or cash on glass. Let me know if you have any questions or need any more photos.
Thanks,
Simon
