Well doesnt look like the global supply of electronics is getting an easier anytime soon.

No stock of rpi4's, no stock of teensy 3.5's. Frikin knightmare trying to get hold of embedded controllers now. So much for using modern parts, same problems as 40 year old chips and maybe even worse. rPi4 lead time just went back to end of feb 2023...

The guys in operations at work seem to think it will get better this calendar year. I'm not holding my breath.

Problem with a lot of the hobbyist stuff is the margins are low, so it's not a priority. When you have a limited number of wafers it's just more profitable to stick enterprise/datacenter chips there which have higher margins.

I predict its not going to change - this is how it's going to be for the next ten years if not longer.

Lucky me stocked up on 100 X ESP32s dev boards a while ago.

Good for you, and when those run out?? I have stock piled a lot of parts but my resources will only stretch so far. I can't have an electronics store like Farnell or Mouser in my house!!!. I'm already at bursting point with all the parts i have!!! And this is across the board for many businesses to, just look at the nightmare unfolding for the zx spectrum next computers.... They had to move to another xilinx fpga because the current one was halted in production in favour of other chips...

The end result is simple, less custom/complex products in all 'hobby' sectors.. Not great really

Latest going round the mill is stern won’t even be doing a boutique or studio title now between Rush and the cornerstone they pushed back due to parts more so than the backlog.

I checked on Rpi3b+'s a few weeks ago - CPC way out (2023), RS were quoting april 2022. Checked back last week - April 2023.

In work - Cisco now quoting 200+ days lead time, and in fact wont quote any more because of the timescales involved...

I genuinely think people dont get the gravity of the situation.. and will only get it when it affects them directly (eg kettle breaks and the only one available is the £100 one, because no-one else wants to buy them as they are too expensive!!!!)

No point worrying about something you cannot change.

David

I guess your business doesn't depend on them then :-/

Pin2DMDs (both versions) on hold due to STM32 going from £10 to £60, if you can get them
Afterglow Rs same, atmega328 going from £2 to £40 overnight
Arduino Nano dev board up 300%
FTDI chips up 600%
Luckily the ESP12F which I use for my Lollypops are holding, but for how long, I dunno.
I pretty much have to redesign the BOM for every build now due to shortages of one thing or another

Still can't get a good handle on the reason for the shortage?

It’s not a new issue - I flagged this issue to the government in 2017 and said there was a huge oppo for the UK to get it to this business and clean Up.

Are we going to get a chart run down every Sunday of who has accumulated the most points 😂

This exactly!!

So that’s most arduino based projects ****ed now to. I have probably 20 to 25 of these ics in stock now but when they go who knows…

Oh and China just went into lockdown again. Utsource says all orders are unable to ship…

I got this message from a supplier yesterday too. Good to know it wasn't just them giving me excuses for running late

When my stock of pi’s run out I’m a bit stuffed as well :(

I can’t see how the UK could clean up in the chip making industry as we have all the same issues has China right now plus would cost 4x the cost to make them here no one would buy them. You can’t compete with there dirt cheap labour and hard working ethic’s here n the UK.

Back to CMOS it is then. Dust off your 4xxx cookbooks and crack the spine of horrowitz & hill
