Games bought on a whim you thought wouldn’t last that long

On the back of the other thread about games you bought you instantly didn’t like, I thought about starting this thread for games that you bought on a whim that you thought wouldn’t stand the test of time.

For me during lockdown I bought Mandalorian Pro as a stop gap to see me through until my preordered Godzilla premium was ready.

The plan was to sell it to make room for GZ when it arrived.

To this day I still love the game and ended up selling GB instead to make room for GZ.

I think it would take something pretty special to have to sell it. Possibly Jaws, but I will have to wait until they have officially announced it before making that decision.

Similar story here - bought Stranger Things Premium pretty much on impulse during the pandemic. I’d played the Pro just before things kicked off in early 2020 and hadn’t really liked it, but after months stuck inside I wanted something new before the Winter lockdown and it was one of the few games Phil had in stock at the time. I honestly didn’t expect it to last long but it’s still here three years later.

More recently I picked up a TMNT Pro. It was a game I didn’t think I’d get on with but needed to try just for the theme. I’m enjoying it much more than I thought I would - too early to say if it’s a long term keeper but no regrets about buying it.

Everything over my first 3 games, I was meant to have 3 machines in a bedroom upstairs. Never planned or expected to convert the garage to be able to fit more!

More specifically probably TMNT. I had a DP on order but knew it wasn’t coming for a while. Hubby said he’d play TMNT and encouraged me to buy it. I’d played it at EC a few times and thought it was just ok but I thought this would be the machine that pulled him into the hobby too and then he’d be hooked, so I bought it. It didn’t, he doesn’t play it or anything else but I love it and can’t see it going anywhere anytime soon.

Black Rose.

I bought Rosie and Roadshow together as my first pins. Rosie was partly impulsive as I knew how attached I get to things and worried I'd not be able to sell a pin, so I wanted one I wasn't dead enthusiastic about, that I'd swap out easily. I'd played it on pinballfx3 and was interested to play a real one. It seemed to be a one shot game, and I hear people still say this when talking about Black Rose.

Road show and Rosie arrived together and my pinball journey started.
I struggled to get into Rosie for a few weeks, if not months, neither were my friends. I still enjoyed it, It was pinball!

I did a lot of work on it, aligned the flippers lower and fine tuned a few ball guides/ball feeds then all of a sudden it was a different game. Even my friends came round to it. It wasn't a project, it was all working, just had little things you'd not necessarily notice but make a big difference to how a game plays.

I really loved the gameplay, hitting the whirlpool to light locks, starting multiballs, relocking balls then ramping out to collect sink ship letters. I rarely went for the straight up the middle shot because it was a tough shot when I'd realigned the flippers.

Definitely an underrated game😄

People underestimate game setup, I've been obsessed with dialing in and flippers ever since 🤣

Fish Tales. Was never a fan when they were in the wild, just didn't grab me.

Bought one to tidy up, play a few weeks and sell on. That was years ago. Bought a second one, put them side by side, and took the best bits to create a really good machine.

Unless you have put some time in and fully understand a good example I don't think you can form a proper view. A broken switch, slow pf, wrong pf angle, or a weak ramp shot can totally destroy your opinion of machine.

Batman 66, I wasn't really on the market for one but I'd sold Elvira and it became available at a good price.

Turned out one of my favourite games and it's seen off some pretty illustrious titles.

Cosmic Gunfight. Bought it cos I wanted a new project. Wasnt a lot wrong with it. PF a little worn and a patch that was down to wood and resetting when you pressed both flippers fast. (Which I did think I had resolved but every now and then it still rears its ugly head). Kinda dont wanna part with it now. Tidied PF up, repainted cabinet and have got it in the work office cos im outta space. But I deffo like it more than I thought. (Maybe its just Williams FX nostalgia that gets me when I play :) )

This should be in both recent threads games you immediately hated and this one.
I bought a fully loaded BM66 le from @CHRIS B PINBALLS inc topper and projector and tried so hard to like it.
Not long after I sold it taking a £1k hit in the process only to be told off far too many owners I didn’t give it a chance.
Roll on a few years later and a super nice CW edt was offered so I thought I’d give it another chance.
I am so glad I did and although it doesn’t quite flow as nice as some it’s definitely a Lyman masterpiece for code that has me playing it on a regular basis.

Stern Mustang. bought for parts as it had been in a flood. New transformer and a clean and bingo. Even better with alternate soundtrack.
