Future Pinball pick ups

So after couple of years pining for a pinball machine I managed to pick up my first pin in Jan. I’ve only owned arcade machines, so getting used to the qwerks has been an interesting one. I picked up an Alien SV second hand and I’ve modded a few bits, whilst updating a few parts.

I love the pin, though it is a bit slow, but overall I enjoy it a lot. My high score so far is 65 million, and I continue to play it every day.

I’m looking to pick up another two pins come Oct/Nov. Godzilla Premium is an absolute, my favourite theme and it supposed to be a great shooter. So easily sold on that.

The remaining pin I am not so sure. I’ve looked at Big Lewbowski but heard it’s very shallow, and not the best pin.

So a few I’m considering as an alternative is: The Hobbit, GnR, Iron Maiden, Deadpool, Medieval Madness, Pulp Fiction.

Have people here owned or played these pins? It would be great to get an overview on what makes them great. I’ve watched a few reviews where possible, but feedback from members would help me build a better picture.

Any advice on which ones are the most reliable, easy to maintain would be much appreciated.

Hey. If your grail pin is Godzilla then why dont you go for that first? Its currently #1 on the pinside100 so it is highly rated in a "you cant go wrong kind of way". You can then find out what u like about godzilla and alien respectively and roll those decisions into future purchases

IMDN is great - if you like their music. Great layout and good modes. Shoots well, with plenty of flow.

Difficult enough to keep you wanting more but accessible enough to achieve goals.

I had a loan of a Godzilla Pro for 6 months and while it is very good - I didn't feel the need to own one afterwards.

I think Steve Brum has it up for loan at the moment - it plays very well.

How much does a 6 month rental set you back? I’ve never considered loaning a machine.

My advice would be to not get stuck on any particular title. As you own pins your tastes will evolve and you might find that your grail machine isn't what you thought it would be. Good luck!

I don't know anyone that has got sick of Godzilla yet, it's a brilliant theme and also the best shooting machine ever made!

I'll never get sick of mine! Get one its the best!

Big Lebowski is a dream theme for me but willing to wait as lots more produced so prices on secondary market will dive a little

Hobbit is shallow and like chopping wood but I would own one again its a beautiful machine

MM - One of the best DMD games out there and great home machine to have

Deadpool - Great shooting game and code is great

Iron Maiden - Elwins first and brilliant will keep you busy a long while

When I move away from TBL - you pull me back in. 😂 Also number 12 on pinside. I think for balance, it’s that or the hobbit.

As above I have a HUO Godzilla for rental at moment. IF you cant do transport yourself it works out at £500 +£120+£120 for 6 months

I would definitely rent before buying, if you can.

All our pins were played (extensively) before we bought them. We are lucky enough to play a lot on location. Maybe see if you can get up to Pinfest for a day - lots of opportunities to try different machines on Freeplay before you purchase?

I don’t get the fuss about Godzilla.

It’s not a bad game in any sense but I’ve never walked away from one desperate to buy one. Both AFM and Ac/DC left me desperate to track one down. To a lesser extent do did WCS.

If a Godzilla came up at the right price I’d potentially buy one but out of the list above Deadpool, iron Maiden and MM are more fun.

As others have said it’s all personal choice. Even a Z list game can be fun for a few weeks. I’d go for anything on the sales lists that looks interesting. It’s a good time to be a buyer at the moment.

@Fubar is bang on the money - Tastes will change and you will then find your groove

I started off with Whirlwind for 6 months, then got SnS Gottlieb, next was spiderman which lasted 2 weeks because i did not enjoy it one bit yet its rated very highly…
Then simpsons pinball party for a few months, Buck hunter few weeks again - loved it when i first played then once home did not , Creature from the black lagoon which was really great but it’s a specific game and i felt I needed more.
I picked up GZ prem which i’ve had for 18months now , TNA over a year, radical was a bust and couldn’t wait for it to leave.

Generally people’s opinions are more or less the same about a game but some like them more than others and there are times when a great game is not great for you which is fine as there are soooo many to choose from

Oh I also have GTF but am the only one in the UK who does. I think it’s great, needs a little code work. Deceptively difficult.

Looking back I am eager to play whirlwind again

All this because i ordered Cactus Canyon 2.5 years ago just for some home pinball fun and still waiting for it 🤦‍♂️

Apparently Elton John is something people are very excited about

I forgot to add the V Pin which if i could i would get again - This was really something else and with over 300 titles on it i could check through so many. I played a lot i won’t really get the chance too. Helped me heaps with interest and game types.

It is pretty subjective, which is why I recommend playing a lot on location, if you can, as then you understand what sort of pins you fancy (and don’t).

My favourite pin remains Fish Tales. I’ve had mine for three years.

I think Elvira House of Horrors is MASSIVELY overrated. Don’t understand the appeal at all, but it’s massively popular here and on Pinside. Likewise, Tron. Always in high demand on here, but ‘meh’.

Apparently Elton John is something people are very excited about

I am literally the only person in the known pinball universe who is very excited about Elton John. I keep turning up places and shouting “ELTON JOHN, IT’s GREAT!” And… crickets… Or just “but it’s Elton John…” :D

GTF, however, is underrated. Better than Jaws IMO. It’s a truth universally unacknowledged that people will hype up modern Sterns even when Stern s**t the bed (although Jaws is far from that) because Stern were the only pinball manufacturer for a long time and kept the light going during the last dark age.

Horses for courses. I had an AC/DC Premium for over 2 years and it had fewer games than I've put on Godzilla in a month

To be honest neither do I. I've played it alot and it's never hooked me, I appreciate it, it's not a terrible game, just personally would never have one, would take foo fighters over it, which I rather like.
As said before one man's pinball pleasure is another pain
Advice that others have also given us try and play for a period of time, where possible with the sound on. Some games such as JJP guns and roses work really well at home, have a deep rule set, however the first couple of games in a load arcade can feel a bit 🤮

There are loads and loads of Godzillas the second hand price is unlikely to remain high due to quantities, might be better to wait and try something else in the meantime
