I’m going to try making a Tips & Tricks video for good competition play on our Fish Tales over Xmas, using the PinTips website, PAPA Tutorial, (etc.) for information.

I’m looking for good strategy tips for what shots to make, and when to make them, which will - hopefully - provide some context to the PinTips.

I‘m not a great pinball player, so hope people better than me (which is, basically everyone, can provide some advice :) ) I’m aiming the tutorial at novice to intermediate players, who - I’ve found - are underserved by the PAPA videos.

I know Fish Tales pretty well, so looking for strategy advice that goes beyond the Caster’s Club and super-jackpots giving the biggest scores, and monster fish also being a possible (lower-scoring) strategy, e.g.
  1. Are there any Fish Tales-specific things to consider when approaching an unfamiliar machine?
  2. When might you consider monster fish -vs- Caster’s Club?
  3. Are there any specific angles/leading flippers for this pin?
  4. Any other strategies you should consider, e.g. in match play?
If you’re NOT happy for me to quote you by your username in the video, please say :)

My favourite thing about fish tales is there's three clear objectives of different levels of risk/reward.

On a very hard machine, like Matt Vince's where top players were scoring < 10m, or if you know the target score is low (pingolf or you're going last in matchplay), one video mode is a decent score.

Then of course ramp punching for a middling score, and multiball super jackpots if you need to blow it up.

1. What flippers has it got? Lightning or normal?

2. Monster fish feels safer - if you can hit the ramps consistently. Multiball could be a lot of build up and no payout if you don’t get a fair few jackpots. More risk/reward.

3. Trap from left loop if you can, can’t always easily, but worth testing on a ball save.

4. Psyche out opponents claiming the machine possess voodoo qualities cursing all those that play in their place (eg player 2 has never scored over 6mil) … not sure how far this strategy would get you, yet to test it.

What @strobey says. In a competition fish tales is only a Monster Fish or Multiball strategy game.
Don't waste time trying to stretch fish, it's not worth it.

If ball save is off try to catch the ball on launch with a live catch on left flipper, if you're not comfortable trying that , don't hit the ball at all and let it bounce making it easier to catch on either flipper when it loses momentum.

Attempt backhanding the left orbit/spinner. On some fish tales it's possible and even easy. A safe way to bag the monster fish as it only as to tickle the spinner.
On some games a good back hand cam go all the way to the saucer which is perfect for jackpots or starting video mode.
