Yes, this is the method I would try as well. I've used peroxide on my F-14 white beacon and it cleaned it up well. It didn't bring it back to gleaming white, but definitely removed 30 years of cigarette tar colouring. You can use pure peroxide straight out of the bottle of stuff found in hair shampoo. I think the process is called "retrobrite" or retrobriting. A Google search will show you how to get started.I use Hydrogen peroxide (3% kind) to regenerate the colour of Lego when it whitens or discolours, not sure if that method would work for your issue.
