Me - "Got the keys to the head?"
Owner - "Oh, lost those..."
Me - "OK, drill it is.... " (Opens head, removes backglass and finds)

Owner "Oh, there's batteries in it..."

Batteries installed in Dec, 2004. Still it works and could have been worse. The corrosion rusted 2 of the batteries to the holders. Yikes.

Y'know I just knew that was a link to a picture of fluffy-ness! :P

I don't think there's any damage off hand. When that alkali starts travelling doesn't it make a damn mess? I had a go at fixing a couple during lockdown with "some success".
It's the trace rot that's the problem. You take a glace and say, well, it's obvious what's SNAFU but sometimes what you think is gone isn't. A strong light will show the broken traces and some decent eyesight helps....

There was still a bit of charge in the batteries as well...

Maybe a custom message would be a good idea on the dmd to change batteries by for some people.
Got away with that one though!
A custom message on boot would be a good idea, definitely!
