Hi

I'd like to get the cabinet refurbed on my Whirlwind. Any idea on the likely cost of this plus decals and who might do this? I've seen Manny at Woodrech on EBay but was wondering if this is an average price and if there was anyone else as an alternative?

Thanks all

Irving

I've just had my Fish Tales cab done by @replicas and he has done a fantastic job, it looks awesome  I'll post some pics in my shop log thread soon :D Can you get replacement decals for Whirlwind?

Thanks Ron. Yes you can get replacement decals bug they are far from cheap at around €250 from Ministry of Pinball. I'll drop @replicas a line to get a ball park figure

That's about the going rate for the best quality decals  You can get cheaper for some games (mainly from Hungary and Croatia) and people on here have used these and apparently they're decent quality but for the top notch stuff it costs a few quid :)

Cheers Ron. Messhge sent to replicas. Noob question, I've started a conversation with Replicas, is this a private message or does it show on the forum? I couldn't see a private message choice anywhere. Thanks

I'd be tempted to look into the Croatian decals for whirly. They are pretty good. And the art is pretty simple. Solid bold colours with no fade in or out. Not a lot to cock up really. And they're £90 delivered.

Just for general info if anyone needs a new cabinet, I gather Pinball Dreams is about to become a supplier of official new Williams cabinets which will be supplied naked or predecalled.

Sounds like @replicas does a fantastic job with existing cabs though.

That sounds good do you have a link for them?

I hope someone comes up with a screen printed cabinet kit, like that guy in the US who posted on Pinside had - but gave it up as he had a job and didn't want to dedicate the time to it.

You will probably lose money doing up a title like whirlwind should you ever sell.

If it were mine though, I would still buy the best decals I could find.

My fishtales decals were good quality etc.. However the coin door decal registration was out. It wasn't possible to have the start button in the centre of the yellow circle with everything else lined up and there is still white visible round the corners of the coin door bezel. Although it would seem Carl Lawrence still had these issues and his decals were from the states.

Yep ! Had mine from a friend ,really really happy with quality and very easy to fit etc etc
It looks like to me USA use a more squarer coin door then the uk so mine and spandanglers could be a copy from a US version one maybe ,but all and all dead happy with mine !!

Yes I think you're right. Prices on here definitely seem cheaper than mugs paradise (eBay) but I didn't know about this at the time:(..

Not sure how much a good one would go for but I paid £1200 . I was thinking about a new playfield but by the time you've done the cab too then you are looking at the machine owing you £3K which is horrendous. Then again, if you don't sell it.........

I think last ok one on here, can't remember exactly but think cab may have been shabby... check old listingsfor details, went for 1k, so 1200 for a good one seems ok tbh.

Mate, if you love it, do it. Who cares. Just be realistic that if you sink another £2k into decals and a playfield (which CPR are redoing) and other odds and sods then you decide one day to sell it, accept the fact you're gonna take a hit on it. People will always pay more for a minter. I spent the best part of £3k restoring my taxi if you added it up over the years. Is it worth it????. Hell no. I'd never sell it for that. But I'll never sell it. I don't know the condition of yours but £1200 may have been a tad over the odds but nothing too drastic.

Good news then boys! To be honest, I looked for ages for one on fleabay but nothing ever came up. Playfield is basically sound and it all works and the boards look sound. I have had Andy Neatherwood round here a couple of times to fix various bits and he reckons it's basically sound so perhaps not too bad in the end

Anyway, the reason I started this thread was because I was looking for advice or better still people that could restore the cab, I was given replicas name but heard nothing back so I assume he's too busy. Anyone else?

There are a few people who redecal cabs. Replicas, newdos, Matt Adams, off the top of my head. It's a labour intensive job and a bit of a pita. So I guess they get a bit burnt out after a while and fancy a break from it all. Give them a nudge. All great guys who I'm sure will get back to you

There's that Pete Bell guy from Retro Refurbs who occasionally restores a pin. Apparently he's got some decent shop logs on here somewhere but I've never seen them.

I bought the Whirlwind which was for sale here and paid £900. It was at the top of my wanted list and as you say they don't come up too often so I jumped soon as I saw the listing.
Cabinet is shoddy as Grizz said but I enjoy :cuckoo: doing them up so I'm not too fussed.
Same with Spandangler and his Taxi I'm on the list for a CPR playfield and will buy a new plastic set when they rerun them. Add new ramps, decals, odds and sods, etc, there's no way I'm ever going to make my money back.
I know for a fact I'll never sell it and it will give me many hours of fun and frustration along the way during the refurbishment but when it is done I stand back and think "I did that" :)
