Belt or orbital sander?

The last (and only) cabinet that I sanded down to remove all the paint and get nice and smooth I used an orbital sander and it took ages. I just wondered if anyone has used a belt sander to make this process faster, or is a belt sander too aggressive. I wouldn't use a belt sander on a playfield, but what about a cabinet?

Use a DA. An abreviation for dual action sander. Orbital just spins, a DA spins and has oscillations. There's air type run off a compressor or electrical. Air is a lot cheaper. Here's a DA random orbital sander is action...

Abrasives wise you've self adhesive and velcro type pads (Hookit is the 3M range). 3M or Scotch is expensive but great, you can buy a cheaper version.

+1 on orbital.

A belt sander could introduce tramlines.

Sorry if obvious, but the quality of orbitals varies enormously. I have a makita bo6030 and I attach my henry vacuum to it with gaffer tape. Crude but very effective. The sander has adjustable speed control - so you can optimise speed v disc grit.

You then need a mix of sanding discs. They come in 40, 60, 80, 120, 240, 320, 400. A 40 grit disc on this sander will remove pinball artwork in seconds, you rapidly need to put less abrasive discs on the machine.

This is a great idea. Ive got an old henry, and I hate the dust is causes when I sand inside, so I’m definitely gonna give this a go.

I do like Makita stuff! Don't forget your dust masks either. I know the bag will catch most of it but bear it in mind.
