Has anyone attempted populating these, any ideas of sources for the ASIC socket?
Any other 'hard to get components' i should be concerned about?

Cool, fair bit of soldering to be done! The sockets should be easy enough to get, maybe CPC or even Ebay
 
He has the chip, they are £40. How much was that bare board?
 
I am after the socket as well, the board was £35 + shipping. Looks perfect for replacing an acid damaged board if you don't mind the soldering
