Are DMD's going to look very dated soon?

So here is WOZ -

With the advent of LCD in pinball machines, just wondered what this will do to people's perceptions of the good ole DMD???

I was looking at this and imagining how martians on AFM would look on this screen.......awesome:D

It really depends on the quality of what is put on the LCD. A bit of cheap and nasty CGI is going to look worse than a finely crafted DMD animation. This is the biggest worry about WOZ for me. The graphics on the two Pinball2000 games looked pretty tacky to me at times. It made the technology look bad and I can easily imagine JJP suffering from a similar problem. It's all very new though and I'm sure there will be a steep learning curve from the pinball creators concerning this new direction.

I'd really like to see hand drawn animation being used on these screens over CGI and video. I want to see all sorts of cool stuff flying around and melting and turning to clouds and explosions. All in HD and bright colour accompanied by crisp sounds effects. Basically, this opens a whole world of possibility and is akin to giving an artist who has been scribbling with a pencil on the back of an envelope, a large canvas and a cupboard full of art materials.

I hope JP is up to the task.

It's not.

Although People who complain about the above video but crow over the following need their heads looking at.

We aren't getting Michael Bay in to create the LCD images people

At the risk of being told to get my head looked at, I far prefer the colour DMD to the prototype plasma screen thingy. Sure the DMD is dated but it's got retro charm.

The LCD COULD be so good but in this initial clip just looks pretty naff. Now I don't like WOZ as a theme but the flying monkeys would make a good clip. I just wonder if they are being limited by such an old film in terms of effects.

Mind you, consider what they could of done to LOTR etc with a LCD screen.

I imagine creating animations from scratch is very laborious and time consuming. Pinball companies don't have big departments to fly through this stuff like TV and film companies, it's usually one or two guys spending a few months in their sheds putting it all together for DMD animations. X that by 10 for an LCD screen.

Here's a show reel of the work the guy doing the animations has done in the past. Looks **** hot to me

some great stuff there...

Obviously budgets will be less on a machine but hopefully they will use the LCD well.

Think LCD has massive potential but surely will work better with a state of the art movie? The Hobbit ( if made by JJP ) will have tons of clips on the LCD screen. I do think it is difficult to make a 1940's movie look state of the art. On the plus side WOZ is one of the most recognizable themes in the world so will bring tons of new people to pinball.

Hmmmm ....though guessing most are going straight into collectors homes rather than out on site.

Its that old 'theme' conundrum again ...did Avatar, LOTR, Spiderman ...all huge recognisable themes...pull in a new crowd ? And really how recogizable a theme is WOZ to say the 16-25 year old age group ? Be interesting to know. Surely the age group you would want to hit in the interests of pinballs future ...but this age group unlikely to lay down $$$$s on a pinball machine, and so need to find them on site.

Good points.

JJP needs to do a leasing deal with a major movie theatre company or something maybe?

The lcd animation is a little cheesy, but you hear no other music in that clip, which i'm certain will complement the 'multiball' imagery by building crescendo filled tunes into the sequence.... I mean, you cant really expect the machine to shut off all other tunes and 'just' play the multiball lcd sequence.

The possibility of internet tournament capability REALLY has me interested however. Any machine can get boring, but throw in another live soul playing head to head across the globe and this adds a whole new dimension to the game which is right up my street. In fact, that feature alone could be the very next best thing in pinball, especially if the lcd's could be used to taunt your opponent via built in webcams. Go on, think about the fun to be had there....
