rather then switch something on straight from the mains you can control the ac voltage from 0 up to 260V
so if something starts to smoke you can 'limit-then-damage', mainly from my CRT monitor repair days!

handy if you've got a 48V ac relay you want to test then you can set it to give out 48V ac
 
I have one - 15A - it’s used for old stuff to bring up slowly, or for reforming capacitors…
I use mine quite regularly on old valve equipment…
 
In my T.V repairing days, many moons ago. You couldn’t repair tv’s without having this on your bench.
Very useful indeed.
