Hi folks, (not pinball related but techy)

I have an appliance from the states, the badge states 120v 60hz 650w.
Output : 19v 0.6A

I know I need a step down transformer for it to work safely in the UK, for instance this : (see attached picture).

Thing with the step down transformers are they are big and bulky..
Is there a way to modify the appliance itself so it uses UK voltage? Or fit something inside the appliances so it steps down? This isn't something I am going to try myself, don't really want to burn my house down.

But if it's possible, and someone knows what they are doing, happy to hire you for the Job

I am no electrical expert but any transformer has primary and secondary wi dings around a core, sufficiently robust to handle the voltage/current.
So I believe the answer is likely to be no.

Also UK ac voltage is 50Hz. This may be an issue depending on the item you are powering.

Someone more knowledgeable may confirm/contradict the above [emoji1]

In answer to your question, you just need to find a UK power supply that will output 19V at at least a 1A. Easy enough, but the challenge might be matching the DC power plug.

It would help if you clarified what the appliance and it's connector actually was?

Not so fun, but it's a robot hoover, a shark with a self empty bin
Shark IQ RV100AE

edit. Before any asks "why?"
Ebay, beer, boring Friday nights.

Yes, the robot thing parks itself in the charging bay, then a motor kicks in and e. Empty the robots dust collection into a seperate box that is built into the base.

The connector is picture attached.

That's the mains input lead, but no matter I get what you mean.

If they don't so a 240V version i think you're stuck. The PSU looks to be built in to the base.

Time for an upgrade....

Yeah they don't do a UK version. Sorry, not sure what you mean by the connector

Will the step down 240v to 120 work?

Thanks for the help, I'll have to buy a kennel for it and hide the transformer in there

Now - it is worth having the bottom off whatever you are plugging in.....

Does it motor as even with a step down transformer this wont run the same speed (to do with 50/60hz)

Many goods now have the same transformer for 220/230v or 110v- they are jumpered or wired in the factory to suit the country they are going to.

If you PM me some pictures I may be able to tell you how to get it working without the transformer (which your first choice will do fine by the way).

Excellent thank you
I shall have a go at taking the bottom off and will fire you over some pics

Tried it with the step down transformer today, the motor is burning like a gooden, sparks everywhere

Doesn't sound like the AC is regulated for all of the base unit then. Syncronous motor perhaps? Running too fast?
